Television Love Letter, Pt. 1

Where we find our hero waiting out the long summer months by actually getting things done

gameshow_main.jpg

Summer is not a good time for television. It's a time for being outside, going on vacation, catching up on reading, I don't know, that's what I've always heard. But the truth is that there aren't very many shows on in the summer! What choice do we have but to go for bike rides and read Anna Karenina and make friends with people who have cottages?! No choice at all.

However, some tv-land people understand the niche summer tv market. And that market wants shows like Canadian Idol (well, it obviously can't be aired during American Idol now, can it) and, seriously, GAMESHOW MARATHON.

What?? I don't understand - a show where people play more than one game at a time? Oh, in a row? And they're not just people, they're celebrities?? TRUE. (And the Brits invented it. shockah.) They even play PLINKO. AND Ricki Lake hosts. It starts tonight at 8 on CTV, which is a channel of great importance because it is one of two (or three) English-language channels I, and many people in Mtl, get free over the free airwaves of freedom.

Oh, you doubt me? Look, I found airdates on the internet:
- Wednesday, May 31: The Price Is Right
- Thursday, June 1: Let's Make a Deal
- Wednesday, June 7: Beat the Clock
- Thursday, June 8: Press Your Luck
- Thursday, June 15: Card Sharks
- Thursday, June 22: Match Game
- Thursday, June 29: Family Feud

And then after that is another summertime hit: So You Think You Can Dance? Which is great! The judges are even bitchier this year too. Yes, this isn't tv-show year 1 anymore: you have to "step it up," as they say in the tv talent-show business. I'm actually considering getting my VCR out of the storage closet and setting it up to tape these shows when I'm not home. (I just have this feeling that not too many people will be uploading them. And this feeling that my tv love/hate has gone too far.)

The other summer television option is, of course, DVD sets. I'm both comforted and upset by this. Comforted because I know that even though there are many many shows I've missed out on, I can go rent them any time I want (nb. Once my thesis is defended, I am going to do this. For a month. Or two.) The upsetting part is that a person could drown in all those commercial-free hours. Yeah, go mire yourself in that world: watch 4 episodes in a row, hell, watch 8, buy an air-conditioner, order in, never leave the house.

I'm not going to set my tv-watching summer plans in stone here, but I will say that some tv will be watched, somehow. And I am NOT going to read any of those Lost fansites in the meantime, okay? This is me refusing. And, plus: WORLD CUP STARTS IN TWO WEEKS OMG! More on that later.

POSTSCRIPT: okay, so I taped these shows and can highly recommend watching Gameshow Marathon during the morning, if you have that option, like, if you work at home and are "taking a break" from "work." Points of interest: yes, they played PLINKO!; celebrities are less exciting (and excited) than real people when playing game shows, especially when they are low-level celebrities; game shows make me feel like I should be wearing more polyester and getting more sun and definitely not existing in the early 2000s; and Ricki Lake has NOTHING on Bob Barker, NOTHING.

she totally said it at the end! but it just wasn't sincere enough - all wink wink, "clever"? i mean, c'mon.
i feel like this show would've worked way better in, like, 1998.

What a great giveaway!! :)I'd love to hear your thutohgs/advice on starting off a photography business on a budget. I'm just getting started, and would love to know what you think would be ESSENTIAL equipment to purchase, what the basics are, where to find deals, etc. Basically your photographer's starter kit, which is still affordable, and what I could get by without until my business is more well-known and successful!Thank You!!!
