Vegan Three Ways: Sel Noir Ice Cream and Catering, Patisserie Sophie Sucree, and Montreal Vegan Rejects

Posted by Amie / July 19, 2013

sophie-sucree-chantaltrudelphotographe-vegan-bakeryBet that's not what you thought I meant by "vegan three ways." Just imagine what you were thinking combined with what I was thinking (vegan lemon-basil ice cream with almond, coconut and soy milk, plus mini gluten-free blueberry-coconut tarts, corn arepas with chipotle butter, shallots and grapes, and Boston lettuce salad wraps with blueberries, balsamic and and powdered walnuts à la molecular cuisine). Mine sounds better, right? No?

Lets just say you've probably had worse, and leave it at that.

A little less sexual innuendo and a little more information? Yes, please.

There were a couple of stellar vegan happenings last week in Montreal:

sophie-sucree-vegan-cakesSophie Sucrée Cakes - An awesome new vegan bakery boutique opened last week on Avenue des Pins. It's owned by the lovely Milène Laoun. She's known for her custom cakes but now at the boutique you can stop in for a coffee and a amaranth-based, gluten-free sugar cookie, chocolate brownie with candied salted hazelnuts, blueberry caramel streusel tart, coconut chai frosted mini cake, or five spice and cinnamon sticky bun. The store also sells ice cream by the scoop and by the 500mL container from vegan caterer Sel Noir, and jams from Preservation Society.

Speaking of Sel Noir - Finally! Vegan ice cream that's not all coconut milk or cashews. And Chef Adrian Copeland doesn't use any cheap thickeners or skimp on quality ingredients in his refreshing lemon-basil and fall-flavoured pumpkin ice creams. If someone would buy this man a Pacojet he'd be converting Kem Coba and even Bilboquet addicts by the hundreds.

Sel Noir also does vegan catering, and I promptly ran into the modernist-leaning chef again at the Montreal Vegan Rejects "Eat. Meet." (definitely not "meat") anniversary party at L'Armoire du Haut. For a crowd of hungry vegans he served up 4 appetizers and a scoop of the aforementioned lemon-basil creamy deliciousness. While his South Indian lentil dosa-esque chickpea wrap made with coconut milk, filled with ginger, garlic and onions, and dipped in tamarind chutney scored big, his chipotle vegan butter made with de-odourized cocoa butter and homemade smoked chipotle chili pepper on a sweet corn arepa with grapes and shallots knocked it out of the park.

The powdered walnut in his lettuce wraps required a little bit of molecular assistance from tapioca maltodextrin (a modified starch, like cornstarch) to turn into a walnut powder that became creamy when you bit into the wrap's juicy blueberries, and came to life with a drop of balsamic. Whether you're planning a mini dance party with a few vegan appetizers or an all-out vegan wedding, you should definitely call Sel Noir's owners, Adrian and Margaret, to cater your next vegan event. Save yourself the multi-day trouble of fermenting dosa, powdering nuts, and infusing vegan milks with fresh herbs and fruit...

P.S. They also do cooking classes and pop-up style vegan dinners, including a 3-course gourmet vegan garden party this Saturday near the Charlevoix metro. They're almost sold out, so hurry. $35. info@selnoircuisine.com for reservations. After that, there'll be vegan dessert cooking class and another pop-up style dinner. Tune in to their facebook page to stay up to date.

Speaking of the Vegan Rejects - The story goes that this group branched off from another vegan group on Montreal when the latter started being a bit too preachy about the vegan lifestyle. The Vegan Rejects are known for being a little more accepting and open, having awesome supperclubs that you can find out about through Meetup.com, and occasionally throwing a great party like the one that happened in an otherwise quiet street off rue Masson last week.

Google Maps lied about which side of the train tracks the location was on, but it would have been completely worth jumping the tracks to get to the event. I didn't, though. I walked around like a sensible person. The best parts: a DJ, live jazz band, catering from Sel Noir above, cheap drinks, a great host in the person of Michaela Johnson, and a raffle with awesome vegan prizes including gift certificates from Aux Vivres, Sophie Sucrée, Salon Identité, La Tasse Gamine, Organo Gold, and Propulsion Vegetarian Cantina.

If I was holding a kombucha I'd cheers to many more stellar vegan events to come this summer. Enjoy!
