Buck 65 Contest

Posted by Sisi / April 13, 2008

Hello my pretties, it's time for Midnight Poutine to spoil you with some freebies again.

Musical jack-of-all-trades Buck 65 (real name Richard Terfry) hits Le National next Saturday and we've got some goodies for you. The grand prize winner gets a pair of tickets to the show and a signed copy of his latest album, Situation. We'll also select 5 runner ups to each get a copy of Situation (not autographed, sadly).

There's been lots of speculation about the stage name "Buck 65," but Terfry himself has never confirmed one meaning over another. So here's what you have to do for the contest: come up with your own interpretation for his alias. (Wikipedia rip-offs don't count.)

Buck 65 is a versatile and gifted lyricist with tongue firmly in cheek. You won't want to miss this show.

For more info on Buck and to watch the new video for "Dang," visit:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Buck-65/7508351572

Contest closes on Friday the 18th. Good luck!

Buck's spirit animal is the squirrel ("buck" being the name given to males of said species), which came to him in a dream the night after he'd drunk 65 shots of tequila.

(I can't got to the show on Sat but I'll take a CD if there is one up for grabs!)

Buck's dad was an avid big game hunter. While walking through the bush in 1965, Mr. Terfry and his brother came upon a magical albino moose. The brothers stared in awe as the massive forest cow stood there chewing.

He later claimed it was a life-changing experience.

Flash forward to 1972. Young Buck was born. His father sensed that this too was a life-changing event and started to call his son Buck 65 - in honour of the magical albino moose from "way back when"

See that sad face on the picture? Well that's because he's only got a buck 65 in his pockets.
It's sad to be broke. True story.

Sarah, that's still over three times more money than poor ol' Fiddy!

How's this? "The amount paid to anonymous sperm donor shortly after he was conceived."

Slightly less offensive than what I posted on Sisi's facebook... but I'm still disqualified aren't I? :(

$1.65 was the cost of a bus ticket in halifax in the late 80s. A bus he would ride to his early CKDU radio show.

He once got drunk at a bar with one of those mechanical bulls, and a friend bet him that he couldn't ride it 100 times in a row. He got bucked sixty-five times before he quit (or passed out, I'm not entirely sure which happened first).

Ok, I'm going to put mine in just in case magically no one else can go to the show.

So back in the early 90's, when young Richard was just a young'un, a oft forgotten wave of political tension swept through Nova Scotia. Behind this movement was a group of young activists who used nudity as a political measure to advance the cause of hip-hop in the province. (Kind of like the Dukhabors, but less Russian and with better beats.)Lil' Terfry himself was inspired and soon joined the cause. While the details have been lost to history, a solitary event led to the downfall of these hip-hop hooligans: in the fall of '90 (or it might have been the spring of '92) 65 buck naked individuals set off from Halifax in a valiant demonstration of music loving nudity on a westward voyage across Canada. The details are fuzzy and rumours vary, but it seems they never made it out of the Maritimes.

Buck 65 was born out of respect for those 65 naked martyrs of hip-hop.

Buck is from Halifax. A few years back, the bus in Halifax cost a buck 65. It increased to $1.75 in 2004, and now who knows what, but back then it was $1.65.

I see somebody already got the right answer. I had my hopes up about meeting Buck65 and shooting the shit about the old days on the east coast.
