osheaga.JPG.jpg
Boys and girls, here is your chance to make yourself a proud owner of Osheaga tickets!
Midnight Poutine is proud to provide a chance for two readers to go to Parc Jean-Drapeau on Saturday July 31 and Sunday August 1.

Osheaga is definitely the best outdoor festival in Montreal and if you haven't heard, here's a glimpse at this year's impressive lineup:
-a good selection of locals (Arcade Fire (obviously), Stars, We Are Wolves)
-quieter bands (Keane, The National, Beach House)
-a Piknic zone for all electro fans (Major Lazer, Mary Anne Hobbs, Lunice)
-legendary acts (Weezer, Devo, Snoop Dogg, Sonic Youth)

At this point, you're probably wondering how to enter this incredible contest right?
All you got to do is tell us: what is your top 5 Osheaga-shows-you-don't-want-to-miss?
Two winners will be picked on Thursday July 29.

Happy Osheaga and good luck!

#1: Arcade fire: they've been my favorite band for a few years now and i've yet to see them live! I'm sure it will be a memorable experience!!

#2: The gaslight anthem: i find that they put out two near perfect albums in The 59 Sound and American slang. I hear they're great live, too!

#3: Weezer: they were a band of my youth, they're old stuff was golden! The recent albums have not been as good, but there are a few gems here and there. With Rivers no longer on the guitar all the time, it will definitely make for some pretty awesome crowd interaction and an energetic live show.

#4: Keane: i saw them live last time they were in Montreal; it was pretty much the first time i was hearing anything other than "somewhere only we know", and i was pleasantly surprised. Great live show that i would love to see again.

#5: Metric: 'Nuff said.

#1 The Black Keys: I have not heard a song from them that I have not liked. I have such a soft spot for them.

#2 Lunice: This is the man who got me into glitch-hop! Going to Osheaga wouldn't be complete without seeing him pop and lock to his beats.

#3 Deadmau5: I can't go a day without listening to one of his songs, and I still haven't seen him live, though would love to.

#4 Arcade Fire: I've been listening to them for a few years, and I'd have to say that they transformed my musical tastes drastically since I started listening to them. And I mean that in the most positive sense.

#5 Lazer Sword: Another glitch-hop group I'm obsessed with. Their music changed the way I perceive hip-hop and electro music in general.

1. The National: Whenever I'm in a mood for a good melancholic funk, Boxer is put on repeat. Also want to hear how Matt Berninger's baritone sounds live.
2. The Black Keys: Oh, if only I could smuggle a flask into the park.
3. Pavement: I wanna party, er mope, like it's 1994.
4. Devo: Even suffering through a compilation of their videos (on VHS!) that had awful, awful "comedy" buffer vids in between could not dampen my love for them.
5. Bahamas: I think his songs would make good cottage music and I find his prickly stage demeanor endearing.

5: Snoop Dogg - Come on, does this reallly need an explanation. A legend in the game.
4: Japandroids - I want to see if these 2 guys can actually rock as loud as they do on their records
3: Metric - This one is for my wife. She just gave birth to our first child on July 13 and this is her favorite band. Would be a nice little present for her.
2: Black Keys - Again, first kid born last week and this is my favorite band so a nice little present for me.
1: Arcade Fire - This is for our new kid. Figure I gotta get him started on some good music early and none of that Raffi crap.

(I'm doin' this backwards, to build suspense. Please imagine or supply yr own drum roll)

5) Jimmy Cliff : Ever since watching 'The Harder They Come' (OK, yeah, with subtitles--but I challenge anyone to understand patois at first go), this man's chilled-out reggae spirit has been a #1 ally against school, stress and running out of weed!

4) Seu Jorge : Listen to Carolina. Are you smiling? This is why I need to see Seu.

3) Pavement : 14-year-old me is forever indebted to that friend of my older brother who burned me 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain' and 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea'. I'm never going to see Neutral Milk Hotel, let me be 1 for 2!

2) the Arcade Fire : 'Funeral' might well be the perfect album. the Arcade Fire, for having one guy who just hits a giant drum occasionally but serves no other noticeable purpose, might well be the perfect band.

1) the Morning Benders : this may be a surprising #1 choice, but it's why I want these tickets so damn much. I found this band at about the same time that I found a boy, a good one. The night before I had to leave town (on an epic international bike journey) I went to his place and found he'd put on 'Big Echo'. 'Excuses' and 'Promises', listened over my shitty headphones, pushed me up mountains and down them and away from the boy, much though I'd prefer otherwise. I'm coming back for a few days, but. But. He's working Osheaga, and I can't afford tickets. So, Midnight Poutine, I beg you! Help a sister out, and let me have epic reunitory makeouts to 'Excuses', just like the song was intended.

1- Arcade Fire : My favorite band since they released their first album, Funeral. I really think this is the best band in Canada.

2- Snoop Dogg : THIS is gonna be awesome. I hope he'll play some classic previous stuff like Gin & Juice, What's my name, etc...

3- Ariane Moffatt : I have always been a fan of her voice. De plus, c'est la seule artiste francophone présente à ce festival, si je ne me trompe!

4- K'Naan : We heard him at the world cup and his music really brings something new to the rap music scene.

5- Deadmau5 : I've never heard a Deadmau5 record, but one of my frend is a big fan of theirs, so I'd like to check it out!!

Merci :)

1 - Arcade Fire : because it would be my first time and I've read their recent show in Quebec was very good.

2 - Keane : because of "Everybody's Changing" and "Somewhere Only We Know".

3 - Metric : because of "Gimme Sympathy" and Emily Haines.

4 - Jon Spencer : because Jon Spencer is a showman.

5 - Pavement : because it would be great to hear a few good old songs.

4) Arcade Fire - somehow have not seen them yet, even thought they played a "secret" show down the street from me a few years back.

Holy crap there are a lot of good acts coming to Osheaga! I didn't even really take notice because tix are too expensive for me right now... but I'm going to indulge (torture?) myself here with my top five, just in case I win tix! This really does seem a whole lot more like torture than indulgence, anyway here goes:

5. Blitzen Trapper, from my hometown.
Although their new album is not the best, they do have a great rep of songs to draw from. Also, I feel that you should support your favorite local acts when they're out of their neck of the woods! Plus I miss my NW beards & flannel unpretentious hipster boys...! :)

4. Devo
Did you guys know Devo is waaaay more than just that one song that everyone hates/loves? You probably do, but I'd like to repeat it: Devo fucking rules! Mark Mothersbaugh is an amazing musician, and I would *love* to see him live back with Devo.

3. Owen Pallet
I missed him at Theatre Outremont back in spring (never forgive myself for that one...) and have been listening to a lot of him recently. Just wonderfully creative and beautiful.

2. Pavement
Ok, so yes, 14 year old me has a serious hard on for Stephen Malkmus. But Pavement is one of the most influential bands in my life, I love them dearly, and have never seen them live. Ah... I'm getting an applesauce heart just thinking about them playing rattled by the rush...

1. Sonic Youth
I have never ever seen a SY show that disappointed, but I have never seen them in such a large venue. I think it would be interesting to see how they translate to such a stadium-like atmosphere... could be a religious experience for me, or a huge disappointment. I'm gonna guess it will be epic!

I'm gonna revise my #5... HA! I just saw Horse Feathers is coming!!!! They are incredible, and blew up in PDX after I moved. Just amazingly beautiful. 1) The Black Keys:
From Rubber Factory, to the undeniably orgasmic album Brothers, the Black Keys have domineered the soundtrack to my summer. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to see them perform. The Black Keys soul filled sound live in concert would be the climax of an awesome weekend of music.

2) Owen Pallett:
Owen Pallet is a musical genius, and based on a previous experience seeing him live, knows just how to reduce a large audience, to an intimate interaction between the musician and individual listener. Owen puts an enormous amount of effort, concentration and innovation into his shows, resulting in an extraordinary and unpredictable show every time.

3) Snoop Dogg:
Witnessing the legendary Snoop Doggy Dogg preaching the sermon of "Gin and Juice" to a sea of Montreal fans would be a surreal experience, and one I'd relish in for years to come.

4) Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros:
Because home is where I would be if I was given the opportunity to dance along to the beats of Alex Ebert, Jade Castrinos and co.

5)Arcade Fire:
The album Funeral got me though high school, and left an unshakable imprint on my musical inclinations, opening me up to a whole new array of ideas, and concepts of the sounds and feelings that accompany great music. Seeing my favourite Montreal band, headlining the festival would be absolutely spectacular.

I'm going to take a chance, torture myself and believe for a second that I could actually get to go to Osheaga... IF I were that lucky, I would not want to miss :

Arcade Fire, for obvious reasons, Osheaga seems like one of the best venues to see this band perform in 2010. Since they are from Montreal, I trust they will give an amazing performance in their home town.

Also I've never had a chance to see Weezer although I am a huge fan of the blue album ... brings me back to good times ! So they would definitely be on my top 5 not to miss at Osheaga.

The Cat Empire is an awesome band I've been meaning to see for a year now. I love their timeless sound and energy. Few bands seem to be as rich and eclectic as this Australian jewel.

I would also never miss Frank Turner and his sweet folkiness mixed with enthusiastic punkiness. And if he plays his version of "you are my sunshine", I think I might die of sorrow (in the best way possible).

I've only very recently discovered Devo but these guys must be so hilarious live that I would just have to run and see them and dance around like I've lost my mind.

1- Pavement- If there was a soundtrack for my high school years, Pavement would deifinetly would cover half the album

2- The Black Keys- simply an amazing band and recently saw them on David Letterman and I love that they are gearing their fashion style a la "Mad Men"

3- Arcade Fire- I think they are one of the best bands as far as performing live. Venue can be as small or as big as you can get and they will always make you feel at home.

4- Snoop Dogg- Never got a chance to see him perform live, it would be amazing

5- Major Lazer- Diplo does it again. As for a dj set goes, what better venue than thousands of people outside dancing.
