Float like a butterfly, sting like a B-girl: Dance benefit

Posted by MP / October 24, 2006

JoDee and Helen of Solid State write:

What started as a support network for women wanting to learn more about bgirling (or break-dance) has evolved into a dance company with a mandate to challenge audience perceptions of urban dance forms. We create work that explores themes present in street dance culture, mixing bgirling with contemporary dance, to create a new style best described as Urban Dance Theatre. Since 2000, Solid State has created five choreographies, and performed over 150 times. So far in 2006, Solid State has done over 60 shows, including performances in dance festivals, schools, and nightclubs across Canada, and most recently had our first European performance in the Purcell Room of the South Bank Centre in London, England.

At this time, we must ask for your help in order to continue producing new work, and bringing dance to new audiences. We are very grateful for an Audience and Market Development grant we received from the Canada Council for the Arts, which allowed us to make our European debut this fall. However, we have received no government funding to pay for the creation or production of our work since 2003. We have no support to pay for dancers' salaries, administrative costs, promotion, production costs, or studio
rentals.

Solid State dancers and choreographers have also taught classes and workshops to literally hundreds of teens and adults, spreading a positive, non-commercial message about hip-hop culture. Most recently, we have started to work in collaboration with a high school guidance counselor and an art therapist to develop a series of workshops geared towards improving body image and self-esteem in young women though break-dance. The Limestone County School Board in Kingston, Ontario, supports this initiative.

Solid State also performs, at no cost, at fundraising events every year. Our most notable benefit performance in the past 12 months was at the 'Breast Yourself' event, which raised close to 30,000$ for women surviving breast cancer. We also organize fundraiser bboy/bgirl battles, which allow us to donate hundreds of dollars to organizations such as the Canadian Red Cross every year.

We are the verge of breaking into a new market, where we will have a chance to represent Canadian and Quebec culture on an international level. If we are to continue moving forward at the pace we have set for ourselves, we must turn to you, our audience, to help us bridge the financial gap. By attending our fundraising event, be assured that you will be making a real difference in the evolution of our company. All proceeds raised will go directly back into the creation, production, and diffusion of Solid State choreographies.
