Usine 106U Produces Monthly Exhibitions

I recently learned of a fresh sounding exhibition at a space/collective called Usine 106U – the brainchild of local cartoonist Eric Braün. I missed the Thursday night opening of their March show (and judging by the pile of empties in the corner I missed out on a good time) but I eagerly headed down there over the weekend to check it out.

Four resident artists, and sixteen invited others fill the fifteen foot walls of this cozy and raw new space with a dynamic range of work that I can only describe as being far from mainstream. Some fluffy, some horrific, all interesting. I was impressed by the quality of work collected and displayed by this small studio, and the contrasting styles sitting happily side by side is something you can only find at a place like this.

Although the featured artist is scary sculptor Mark Prent, I was more taken by the mutant plush of La puce a l'agonie – AKA Karine Fournier, and octopus obsessed Mimi Traillette.

Usine 106U is an ambitious project. Devised, organised and run by Eric Braün, Karine Fournier, Mimi Traillette and Jean-Michel Cholette, not only did they build the space themselves, they are aiming for a vernissage featuring twenty artists every month. A new set of invited contributors each time, plus the four permanent artists. You have to admire their ambition; I can only assume that they don't have televisions.

The Current show runs until March 29th, 2007 – Usine 106U, 111 Roy E., Montreal.

Jeff & George,As always you did a woneurfdl job with the photos. Jeff you are right, Nancy manages to be everyone's cheerleader. I still have the photo I won from you at what I like to call employees sell your S*** day , otherwise known as the craft fair. While people you know give you name out. It is you and George that ultimately win the business. Your pictures along with your personalities make Black Thumb stand out as one of a kind.See you soonEleanor
