When I got an e-mail from my Arts editor at The Concordian inviting me to the issue launch of a magazine that she co-founded, I confess to having visions of snobby art kids traipsing around discussing postmodernism with Stilton cheese in one hand and port in the other. I also imagined a cold and cavernous gallery with stacks of massive Vogue-sized magazines with much weirdness but little content.

To my intense relief, I found instead a large handful of students with 3$ brewskis at intimate articule gallery in Mile End. A big projection screen dominated the room, masking behind it rows of alcoves containing small artworks destined for the party’s silent art auction. These included such pieces as a tiny silkscreened cushion with a matryoshka motif and a condom taped to a board. (I felt played by that last one.) Splashy silhouettes danced across the projection screen; because the theme of the new issue was “Interactive Art,” guests were free to twiddle with the projection equipment to vary the footage being displayed.

I talked to Annie Briard about Les Fleurs du Mal’s humble beginnings. The magazine started as an in-class project at Concordia in 2004; from there, it blossomed into an annual publication that receives sporadic funding from the FASA and CSU student groups. Although Briard and Janzen hope to push Les Fleurs du Mal past their graduation dates, it is doubtful whether the magazine will survive without its present funding.

Continued into the future or not, the editors of Les Fleurs du Mal and their contributors have put together a slick, compact little DIY mag full of crass and engaging content. Bonus: unlike our friend Vogue’s groundbreaking 727 pages, Fleurs du Mal is utterly and happily free of ads.
