Heavy Metal Art - A Friday Night Suggestion

Posted by Jer / October 26, 2007

Heavy Metal and Art don't usually mix. Unless you consider KISS heavy metal and their makeup art. But tonight (Fri. Oct. 26), there's a gallery launch event at Emporium that will have you pumpin' devil signs.

Maybe you've heard about Acrassicauda, the Iraqi heavy metal band-on-the-run, that is currently dodging authorities and heavy-metal haters in the middle east. Their story is chronicled in the VICE documentary film, Heavy Metal in Baghdad, which made some noise of its own recently at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Or maybe you haven't. In which case you should know that Acrassicauda aren't just any 'ol Iraqi heavy metal band, they're rumored to be the only one in existence. The band formed in 2001 but the realities of the Iraq's political scene have made being part of the music scene (or almost any other scene) an incredibly dangerous undertaking. After putting up with bombed out rehearsal spaces and accusations of worshiping Satan, the band eventually fled the country. They are still currently seeking safe harbour and soliciting donations from metalheads, artists, or anyone else who cares to help.

Entrepreneur Ben Pobjoy wanted to do more than just donate to the band's paypal refugee fund though, so he's curated a fund raising art show featuring works from over 30 photographers across the globe. The exhibit, called HEAVY METAL IN BAGHDAD - A benefit exhibit for Acrassicauda, is actually the launch of Pobjoy's new gallery space, Emporium, on rue St. Antoine.

So rather than sitting at home and leafing though your old KISS collection, why not take in some heavy metal and art at Emporium. All proceeds go to the band on the run.

The launch party runs from: 7pm- 12am / Friday, October 26th
Extended hours: 11am - 8pm / Saturday, October 27th and Sunday, October 28th
@ The Emporium Gallery
3035 St. Antoine, studio 74, Montreal, QC

The show features work from:
Peter Beste / Jerry Hsu / Tim Barber / Ryan Foerster /Angela Boatwright / Jens Stoltze and many more...
