Kortunefookie- get your fix

Posted by Jasia / July 7, 2009

fortune cookie and peopleFor those of us looking for direction and meaning in our lives, a solution has finally arrived that bypasses the nutritional havoc of eating fried rice every night in order to receive a wonderful cookie-clad strand of ambiguous wisdom.

Jean-François Lacombe's installation outside Articule gallery at 262 Fairmont Ouest brings several new innovations to the fortune cookie experience , an experience which in my books has always ranked above the horoscope as a way to glean interesting information about the future. Lacombe's cookie will be printing out fortunes to all passers-by for the month of July while the inside of the gallery is temporarily closed for renovations.

In addition to being slightly larger than your traditional fortune cookie, Lacombe's creation is made of large pieces of cedar. While the large wooden cookie lacks the traditional tasty sugary element that make fortune cookies so appealing, the fortunes it distributes are no less perplexing.

Visit the Kortunefookie website to participate by adding your own "innermost secret, or your smarmiest wisecrack, or your private prayer, or your most outlandish prediction" to the collection of predictions that are being collected for immediate distribution at the site of the giant wooden cookie.
20090707-fortunedetail.jpgWhile online contributions to the Kortunefookie project are all right, I find them nowhere near as satisfying as visiting the spaceship-like cookie in person. Getting a fortune from the cookie is fast, fun and perhaps profound, but it won't tax your brain in the summer heat. One of my favorite things about this piece is that it doesn't ask too much of me right off the bat, printing out a small paper fortune that I promptly put in my purse and forgot until a few days later when I rediscovered the perplexing bit of paper that records both potential secrets to my future as well as memories of an outlandish wooden cookie.
