Slideluck Potshow

Silly name, solid concept. If you feel like cooking (and eating) and maybe even seeing some good art (I'm usually in the mood for all of these things), get yourself down to 6250 rue Hutchison to the Made of Stills Studio to share some potluck-y goodness while watching a slideshow by some bigger (and smaller) names in Canadian photography.

I generally feel that if you're going to be sharing food, you should be the ones sharing photographs. Why maintain the all too familiar division between artists and audience when the format of a slideshow would lend itself so nicely to an event where everyone gets to be an artist and share their photos, professionals and cell-phone photographers alike?

A potluck, though, does maintain a causal and friendly atmosphere with a nice nod to equality, sharing and community. I'm really intrigued to see how the slideshow quotient will be structured: will there be a narrative by each artist? Will the image sequence be important? Can we eat and talk while the slides are playing or is it hush-hush-look-at-the-art? Are they real slides or digital images in a slide show?

With these burning questions in mind, in hope of finding some tasty food and if I'm really lucky some interesting photos this Thursday night all roads seem to lead to the Slideluck Potshow. Potlucks are always a bit of a gamble; that delicious looking chili may end in a painful night of indigestion. Art events being even more of a gamble than potlucks (you may end-up bored out of your tree) attending this show requires a bit of faith, a bit of bravery and possibly a gambling addiction. But I have a feeling this bet may turn out to be a good one.

I've lived in France for over 20 years now and don't regret a thing. My rule: don't beavhe like an expat - become a local. Best compliment I've ever had: when I bought my current (and rather unique) house my local builder who did some work on it told me "I'm glad you bought this place, not some foreigner".
