Px(c): Art, Commerce, and Catastrophe @ Maison Kasini.
A collection of Px(c)'s images, which ponder the interconnectivity and conflict between art and commerce, as well as indicating the power of advertising to shape individual worldviews. The work of Px(c), the "corporate alter-ego" of Montreal artist Ben Depelteau, is punchy, colorful, and heavily influenced by American and British pop art. Since Depelteau began working under the moniker Px(c) in 1999, he has been best known for imitating advertising strategies to sell faulty products and ideas to mass audiences. Depelteau targets car parts, eyes, fingers, tongues, sunglasses, do-it-yourself art, concepts for gallery art, mouse traps, packages and collages and prints. By presenting himself as a sort of corporation, Px(c), Depelteau ultimately makes a strong statement about the force of commercialism in everyday life. ( Image: Px(c), "To Drown.")

20102009hantise.jpgSpring Hurlbut, "James #2"

Hantise @ Art Mur. French poet Alphonse de Lamaratine once pondered, "Inaminate objects, do you have a soul?" Now, ten Montreal and Toronto artists display a collection of hauntingly beautiful works at Art Mur that ask this very same question--can there be some sort of magical presence in things that seem to be merely corporeal? These "haunting"-themed paintings, photographs, and installations offer glimpses of the hidden consciousness behind everyday objects. Until October 23.

ErikParker- Guru.jpgErik Parker, "Guru"

The Earth is Blue Like an Orange @ Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The second in a series of unusual theme-based presentation in the MMFA's new contemporary art galleries. The exhibition presents 30 paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos, and installations, all infused with a sense of the fantasical and imaginative, which invite the viewer to look at the world from a different perspective. The works are primarily by Canadian artists, but European, American, and Japanese artists are also featured. German artist Erik Parker's psychedelic painting Guru is a highlight. Until March 27.

Talasnik AHK.jpgStephen Talasnik, "Ancient Human Knowledge."

Stephen Talasnik: Panorama: Monolithe Intime @ Battat Contemporary. The first exibition in Canada of American artist Stephen Talasnik's artworks. His highly geometrical sculptures and drawings are simultaneously architectural and imaginative, and manage to create new worlds that seem to exist outside of space and time. Until October 23.

Nelson Hendrix: Time Will Have Passed @ Leonard and Bina Ellen Gallery. The first mid-career retrospective of Hendrix's video and installation art to be exhibited in Canada. His works explores such hefty themes as self-portraiture, the heaviness of speech, writing and portraiture, the passing of time, and our physical embodiment. A must for video art enthusiasts. Until October 16.
