Posted by Christine / April 19, 2011

20110419-minutestomidnight.jpg Four Minutes to Midnight is celebrating the publication of its eleventh issue this Friday, April 22nd at Cabaret Playhouse (5656 Parc Ave.).

The double issue includes "Happy Hour," the final collection of work by American poet F.A. Nettelbeck (1950-2011), illustrated by Montreal-based visual artist Sophie Jodoin, and "Fugue XI," a typographic cut-up poem edited by John W. Stuart, Kevin Lo, Hillary Rexe and Sara McCulloch.

Spoken word artists Moe Clark and Vincent Tinguely will read a selection of Nettelbeck's poems alongside offerings of their own work. The evening's festivities will continue with performances by Montreal rock trios The Lindbergh Line and Nightwood

For more than 40 years, Nettelbeck, wrote over 20 books as well as published zines. Notable of these are "This is Important" and "Throb," which featured pieces by beloved contemporaries William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Wanda Coleman, John M. Bennett and Charles Bukowski.

According to Minutes to Midnight's press release, "Brutal, at times vulgar and aggressive, Nettelbeck's mimetic lines are still musical, despite being so anti-lyrical. An anti-establishment poetry, no matter what the establishment, Nettelbeck's body of work has created some of the most insightful and honest images of America, seen through the cracked glass of the margins. Yet, even in his harshest moments, Nettelbeck was able to imbue his poems with beauty and and tender sentiment without ever becoming maudlin."

"...but what more could/ you expect when you're/ the last of your kind/ living amongst the/ incompetent others/ in the light they waste," quoth F.A. Nettelbeck.

Founded in 2004 by Kevin Yuen-Kit Lo and John Stuart, Four Minutes to Midnight is a Montreal-based literary arts zine that explores poetics and politics in an experimental, collaborative structure. Specifically, one may find creative editing, typography and graphic design within its pages.

Doors open at 9:00 p.m. Entrance is $8 at the door and $15 with a copy of the issue.

More information can be found at the event's facebook page.
