MTL High Lights Festival Feat. Thievery Corporation (Sun. Feb. 22 @ Metropolis)

Posted by Goran / February 19, 2009

thievery corporation.jpg

Their name may come off a tad redundant at a time when general consumer confidence regards the differences between corporations and thieves as mere nuanced subtleties. This D.C. DJ duo clearly embodies both elements of its clever pseudonym. They're set to jam-out at the Metropolis this Sunday as a part of the MTL High Lights Festival.

"We're Stars from MTL and we live around the corner!"

Posted by Goran / November 30, 2008

Stars' breathtaking performance at the Metropolis last Friday was significant in the most general and ambiguous sense of the term. This show, as a break from MTL indie monotony, embodied individual meaning for all involved parties: Stars and fans alike. The capacity crowd arrived aroused, but no more and no less than the performers themselves. It was a damp evening: clearly Montreal was happy to have Stars back in town.

How Swede It Is: Nista EP Launch @ Jupiter (Thurs. Nov. 13)

Posted by Goran / November 12, 2008

Nista Cover.jpg

The Nista EP Launch Party blasts off at 9 PM on Thursday, November 13th (tomorrow) from the Jupiter Room (3874 St. Laurent). In exchange for a $5 cover, you will have the pleasure of experiencing two amazing local bands: Nista & The NDG Philharmonic.

It's a bittersweet moment for me: plugging a hot new local band with Swedish/Icelandic roots as my time in MTL nears its terminus and I prepare for my Scandinavian relocation. For this post, however, I shall focus on the sweet as it's relevance significantly outweighs its bitter counterpart. So if you're a fan of Scandinavian infused pop-rock, like I be, it may very well be in your best interest to click on "continue reading" link below.

Je Reviendrai a Montreal: Ariane Moffatt @ Metropolis

Ariane.jpg

It's true that I should have written this review of Ariane Moffatt at the Metropolis in the French language. Unfortunately, such a post would have been even less decipherable than my regular Anglo babble. My ignorance may prevent me from writing posts in French, but it by no means prohibits me from appreciating Francophone music, or music sung through any other phone for that matter. And when it comes to the phones of the Franco style, I must admit that Ariane is my songstress préférée.

I've kiffed her gravely since my transition to Montreal a few years back. The initial appeal was tied to rumours that she was voted out of the band by the Moffatt brothers for being too rebellious and anatomically different. Maybe she was just too talented.

Michael "Obama Marley Harper" Franti & Spearhead @ Metropolis (Nov. 5)

Posted by Goran / November 7, 2008

Franti.jpgThe Michael Franti and Spearhead show at Metropolis last Wednesday was not advertised as an official Obama victory celebration, but it very well should have been. It made me wonder how many other artists and performers were as gratuitously capitalizing on the election results to infuse some hype into their mediocre concerts. The Solillaquists of Sound did their best to warm up the crowd and set the stage for Franti and his backing band. This Floridian hip-hop outfit displayed a considerable level of talent, but quickly became yet another rap group I didn't need to see or hear.

Aurora, Ontario??s Ruby Coast are riding the indie pop high tide back from the maritimes. They??ll be coasting into Club Lambi (4465 St-Laurent) this Thursday (Oct. 30) with fellow rockers Born Ruffians. Having wandered about Canada like a pack of aimless nomads, they??re set to return to the mainland after a dynamite Halifax Pop Explosion gig with MTL??s own Islands, and Death from Above's Sebastian Grainger & his Mountains.
