The Midnight Poutine Podcast - Sep. 1-7, 2010

Posted by Jer / September 1, 2010

Boo HooSeptember is here but it sure doesn't feel like it. Summer isn't planning on going anywhere soon and is giving us 30+ degree humidity to prove it. Luckily it's also giving us more outdoor festivals and concerts to take in, like this weekend's M for Montreal 2-day FREE event in the old port. As thousands of new and returning students sweat it out in their first week of school, co-hosts Jeremy and Amie give you plenty of reasons to cut class.

The Midnight Poutine Podcast - Aug. 25 - 31

Posted by Jer / August 25, 2010

Bridges to DreamsYikes. For school-going types, summer is ending and fast. Next week is the start of another semester and all of Montreal's campuses are bustling with activity as they get ready for the onslaught. The good news is that there are plenty of shows to keep the returning bevy of students occupied. Not to mention the always fabulous St. Laurent Street Fest, with free music courtesy of Pop on the Main. It's a bit overwhelming but worry not. Amie and Jer are here to take you through this week's local listings.

Land of Talk: Free Track from Forthcoming New Album

Posted by Jer / August 15, 2010

Land of Talk Rocks Here at Midnight Poutine, we've made no secret of our respect and admiration for Montreal-based rockers Land of Talk. Jangly guitars combine with Elizabeth Powell's saccharine but edgy voice to create a truly ambitious sound. Their critically acclaimed debut album, Some Are Lakes, was delicate yet destructive. It landed the band on the 2009 Polaris Prize Long List. Now, after a teasing EP released late last year, the band is set to launch their 2nd full-length album, Cloak and Cipher, later this month.

Thanks to the band and the good folks in their entourage, you don't need to wait to hear it. They've given Midnight Poutine a sneak peek of the lead single, 'Swift Coin' and you can download it here.

The Midnight Poutine Podcast - Aug. 4-10, 2010

Apollo Ghosts (by Steve Louie).jpg Osheaga has come and gone and all of a sudden, it's August. Although we imagine that most of you, dear readers, are holed up listening to your freshly acquired copy of The Arcade Fire's new disc, The Suburbs, we figured you might like a few suggestions for what to see this weekend, in case you needed a break from Win and Regine's bleak take on urban sprawl. Gabby and Jeremy share their picks and the microphone since Amie, mysteriously lost in downtown Montreal, has our second mic. You heard right. Two mics. That's the kind of high-budget gig we run here at MP.

Call & Response: Ira Lee

Posted by Jer / August 3, 2010

Ira Lee.jpgCall & Response is a series of Q&As with bands, artists and random people we dig that live in Montreal, visit here, or have some dubious connection to the city.

Ira Lee is whack. That's what his web url says and, if you take a listen to just 20 seconds of his stand-out twisted hip hop album My Favourite Songs by Me, you'll agree. Often clever, always out there, Lee delivers an undeniably creative and off-kilter collection of songs that will make you laugh and cringe in equal parts. His video for All the Places We Did It is a prime example...cute and dirrrty all at once. Even though the album is loaded with characters and stories, it manages to stay personal and honest.

Sadly, Mr. Lee is off to Paris this fall to try and take over Europe. You can catch his last gig here in MTL on Aug. 14th at Off Interarts, 5145 boul. St-Laurent (part of the Indyish Monthly Mess). Before he leaves, Midnight Poutine has a few questions for this hip hop oddity.

20100728benders.jpg Osheaga storms into town this weekend, so get your outdoor festival shoes ready. Parc Jean Drapeau is again host to this 2-day rockfest, featuring some big name superstars and lots of local talent too. We spend this week's show talking about Osheaga survival strategies, which bands to check out, and the blinding deliciousness of almond biscotti.
