We've got a pair of tickets to the DJ Food set at le National on Saturday, June 16 (with guests DK and Ninja Goon). Man, we are infested with tickets today. In addition to the Ween giveaway noted just below this post, we've also got a pair of tickets to the Dinosaur Jr. show at Club Soda, also on Sat. June 9. I know I was just raving about Ween, but Dinosaur Jr. are equally deserving of apostle-like fandom. To enter our random draw, send your full name, address and phone number to contests AT midnightpoutine DOT ca with the subject Dino. This contest also ends Thursday, June 7 at 4 p.m., and the winner will be notified that evening. Good luck!
Midnight Poutine has a pair of tickets to "An Evening With Ween" at Club Soda on Sat. June 9 that we would like some random person to have instead of us. Those who have seen Ween before know that their live shows are epic and ridiculous, and that their fans are among the most devoted in the history of fans. Therefore, you should enter our random draw, by sending your full name, address and phone number to contests AT midnightpoutine DOT ca with the subject Ween. Deadline is Thursday June 7 at 4 p.m. The winner will be notified that evening. May 31, 2007
Jeremy Morris skips town for this podcast, so it's just me and the custom-made Midnight Poutine mobile studio. This show covers Mutek, Suoni, and piles of other concerts around the city this weekend.Podcast | Get the podcast here.

Unsurprisingly, much news today is being devoted to a report revealing that the No side illegally spent $539,460 on the 1995 referendum campaign. Less than the $3.5 million that some suggested, but still an amount that could definitively stir (or be manipulated to stir) the electorate to turf a minority government trailing in the latest polls. If you're frustrated by the re-appearance in the news of that contentious referendum, or by the continuing impasse in Quebec City over the budget, don't crumple up our newspaper in disgust and throw it on the pavement. Now that's a terrible segue, but now that I'm here, let's note that Friday will mark the arrival of Ville-Marie's beefed-up garbage patrol, out to target messiness downtown. Nice work, Ville-Marie! Let's get the streets and sidewalks around the peep shows, strip clubs and head shops sparkling clean.

MP alumnus Meg Hewings wrote an article in the Gazette not too long ago about the trials of the NWHL, the fledgling women's elite-level hockey league, which can't pay its players, struggles for sponsorship, and has sparse crowds in spite of the calibre of play. So why is the Montreal Roller Derby League (MTLRD) able to cram legions of rowdy fans into its events?I submit that there are three answers to this question: First, the organizers have a great grasp of the concepts of spectacle and performance. Second, beer is sold for $2.50 a can. Third, there's something about women in miniskirts teetering on roller skates and delivering bone-crushing bodychecks that seems to appeal to a broad demographic.

Once again, "bands" have decided to "play" "shows" in Montreal over the next few days, and once again, Jeremy Morris and I help you "listen" to them "in" advance. Or after, I guess.Podcast | Get the podcast here.

Tonight (Wednesday), you may have better odds of squeezing into Green Room to see Dead Bush, Gold Sword and Pink Saliva than forcing yourself into Friendship Cove to see the double album launch action (i.e., two album launches, not one double-album launch) of Shapes & Sizes and Miracle Fortress.

MP alumnus Sara Falconer reports on the Dwarves' May 8 show:Would it be weird to say that the Dwarves sometimes remind me of Pulp? Sure, if Blag the Ripper and Jarvis Cocker are left alone in a room together, one of them is coming out a limbless torso. But still. There's something about that "Ooooh, aren't I bitter, I fucked your girlfriend and she finally had an orgasm" shtick that makes me think that deep down, they're kindred spirits.
The last time I saw Dwarves, they were still going through that whole 15-minute-sets, no-hits, fans-can-go-to-hell thing. Ugh. The thing about the Dwarves is, since they formed in San Francisco in the late 80s, they've been trying to make us hate them. But you just can't turn your back on anything that rocks so much.
Still, that era kind of sucked. So I steeled myself to be disappointed last night. I even prepared a lot of clever, blasé comparisons to Brit pop bands.

Forty has come and gone, but the celebratory potato chips are still with us on episode 41. In the form of fat. Get it? Because chips are .... oh. Uh, the podcast, hosted by Jeremy Morris, with me, is considerably less inane and considerably more song-filled than this introductory paragraph.Podcast | Get the podcast here.

The 40th edition of the MP podcast, which Jeremy described as our "most-jackassed" yet shortly after we finished recording. I don't know--I felt a little off on this one. You be the judge.
