Democracy for Media, Democracy for All

Posted by Hannah / October 19, 2005

imagesimdd_posterjpg.160.png überculture concordia kicked off International Media Democracy Day with Measuring Security Measures a panel discussion and series of low-budget/no budget films that explore securtiy and civil liberties. Adil Charkaoui, a Moroccan-born Canadian suspected by CSIS to be an al Qaeda sleeper agent, introduced the event. His talk was brief but poignant: it is not a question of balancing civil liberties and national security - human rights, civil liberties are absolute. He was whisked out of the auditorium 10 minutes after he began his talk. His severe bail conditions dictated that he return home ASAP.

What followed were films that could make you cry.

msm.jpgThe films speak of human rights violations and racism under Canada's new(ish) security measures following 9/11. They capture the pain and fear of those who were detained without charges, and their families. They draw attention to the media headlines that scream "12 alleged terrorists arrested" and the ones that never appear when the innocent men are released.
