When I say "Election!" You Say "okay."

Dear election-candidate office volunteers:
I know it's no fun to call random strangers on a Sunday afternoon, let alone ask them to come out and vote for your candidate in a freakin' municipal election. I sincerely appreciate your dedication and patience and am humbled by your pro-active relationship to democracy. But here are a few tips for next time:

1. Learn how a phone works. I've provided a picture, and here is a quick guide: Now, all phones are different, but they also all do pretty much the same thing. With "handset" of phone in hand, secure bottom end of handset or "transmitter" (for speaking into) near your mouth and top end or "receiver" (for listening into) near your ear or "ear." When in position, dial random stranger's number (using numbers) by hitting numbered/lettered buttons with end of finger or pencil if you're that way. Wait for ringing sound (will come through "receiver", go in "ear".) Often, ringing will stop and a voice (belonging to a "person") will greet you in one of many possible languages. Don't freak out. Move on to tip #2.

2. Be aware of this basic of phone etiquette: When you call someone else, who doesn't know you, introduce yourself so we don't think you're some overseas telephone scam or have the wrong number and are maybe trying to order pizza. Not only did I think you rude at first, I seriously had no idea what you were on about for the first 30 seconds of the call.

3. Sell It!! Don't mumble your candidate's name like you're the class glue-eater pointing a finger at the guy who's launching spitballs or trading his old-school ritalin for test answers 'cause they put him on something waaay better. And don't give up when I say "Okay, maybe" because it's Sunday and I'm being a lazy lameass. Tell me where to go! Tell me how important voting is! (It's importantish!)

I seriously applaud you for your efforts, thankless volunteers, but damn.
Robyn
