What A. Jolie would be doing if she was in Montreal

Posted by MP / December 8, 2005

Angelina-Jolie-206.jpgThat is, Instead of gallavanting around the world with that diminutive male tramp, Brad Pitt, who, it seems, is trying to adopt Angelina's gorgeous little Laotian scamps. Your new daddy is cute, kids, but wait'll he shoots a film with a slightly younger, slightly poutier femme fatale and wants to adopt her adopted scamps. Oh, this'll get messy, especially when Jon Voight gets involved. The dude is playing the Pope, for cat's sake.

Whoa, seem to have channeled a bit of somebody or other there. Anyway, Angelina, were she in Montreal this weekend, would probably want to get up to one or two of the following options, as submitted by MP's various contributors.

Tonight (Thursday):

Go see Calexico, whose Feast of Wire is a stunning bit of americana. Tonight they're playing with Iron And Wine, aka some university professor turned Sub Pop yelper, performing some songs they colloborated on recently. It will probably be good, but rest up beforehand, because this is pretty much guaranteed to be 3 hours plus of just standing there, Montreal-style. Consider buying new insoles.

All Channels Now! = Charlotte&Richard + Hamish + Basement Wigger + O-Positive.
Four (4) different groups of people, some with loud amps, some with carefully tuned guitars, some with laptops and records and whole consoles of knobs and buttons. Required and recommended by millions - millions + x, where x is awesome. Music starting at 9pm, going until late. At Toc Toc, 6091 du Parc (at Van Horne) (Free! Like birds and sonic booms.)

Kiss Me Deadly plays Sala Rossa (4848 St. Laurent) with locals Shoot the Moon and a band that we kinda liked last time we saw them, Kickers.

In the young-embarrasing-the-old category, you could watch Montreal's (and Canada's) favourite psych-rockers Tricky Woo open for fat, balding has-beens April Wine at the Spectrum. To their credit, April Wine were way better than a lot of dinosaur bands, including Journey and Styx, and, moreover, they haven't released any shitty new stuff like a certain other band still coasting on decades-old success. Well, maybe they have, but we haven't heard it.

Uh, we're working on it.

No rest, all action: The first all-woman boxing card to hit Canada in 5 years takes place in
the Plateau at Sala Rossa. Brunch then some punch. Time to challenge what little you've retained about female combative sports - especially if it involves mud, cat fights, pin-up models and gals who'd mercilessly poke your eye out with a perfectly manicured nail. These are serious athletes and all seats are ringside. Some of the best female boxers in Canada will be on hand to wow. Or rather pow. Insider tip: The Forget vs. Perry match up will be killa.

Women's Olympic Boxing Classic
At Sala Rossa (4848 St-Laurent)
Dec. 11 at 2pm, 20$
Tickets: 284-0122 or 223-2432
Or at Casa Del Popolo
