Required reading dans la belle province

Posted by John / May 10, 2006

Man, I probably got the "dans" wrong in the title, which would be pretty ironic given the subject of this post. Oh well. This will be brief: it is highly recommended that you pick up today's Journal de Montréal in order to read the sports section (I haven't yet found this online). In that section, you will find columnist Patrick Lagacé responding to Gazette columnist Jack Todd, who on Monday trashed Lagacé for a piece he wrote about Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu's inability to speak French. In his wickedly good rebuttal, Lagacé observes that Todd is pretty much exactly what's wrong with Montreal -- he's a unilingual anglophone even though he has lived here for two decades. Which would maybe be fine (actually, it wouldn't, but let's pretend it is for the sake of argument), except that Todd's original column about Lagacé is full of hilarious mistranslations from Lagacé's piece that indicate that Todd didn't actually understand what he was reading.

Brilliantly (and in what has to be a first for the Journal), Lagacé's column appears in both English and French, the English translation so that Todd is able to understand.

Anyway, find a copy. There's probably one abandoned on a café tabletop near you.

Howdy!

Thanks for the head's up. I will go find a copy (it ain't on my normal reading list). However, I'm fairly certain that the journal has published some stuff in English before - something along the lines of having to do with being an immigrant or something.
