Metro Roulette: Jarry

Posted by MP / June 4, 2006

photos by Julien Rosselet,
jarry%201.jpg Metro Jarry is the last stop on the orange line before Highway 40. Beneath it lies the Marché Jean-Talon; above it, Ahuntsic and oblivion.

Pulling into the station, the walls of the Jarry platform seem disappointingly bland at first, but at a closer look they are actually composed of a tight pattern of little raised circles. Things perk up even more on the mezzanine above the tracks, with a cool diamond pattern on the arched ceiling and big, multicoloured art-deco circles on the floor.

When you step outside of the metro onto Jarry street itself, you’re greeted by the bustling multicultural hood of West Villeray. Within steps of the station are a drugstore, cheap pizza joint, SAQ and dive bar: everything you need. There’s even a trashy hip-hop clothing store in the very same building as the metro.

The surrounding area is extremely multi-ethnic, with tons of families from all corners of the world. Cheap Middle Eastern food abounds. About halfway between Jarry and Jean-Talon is the Miss Villeray tavern (also ici, iciand here), one of the city’s best dive bars with a wicked, albeit long since broken, neon sign. jarry2.jpg

Some of you Plateau types are probably reading this going: “As if I’m ever gonna end up at Metro Jarry.” Just remember, the anglo-hipster migration is traditionally northward. I’ve heard people reminisce about the days when Mont-Royal was too far north. Nowadays, people are starting to creep into Petite Patrie. Jarry isn’t far off. Jarry could be your future.

Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though you relied on the video to make your point.
You definitely know what youre talking about, why waste your intelligence on just posting videos to your site when you could be giving us something informative to read?
