85-year-old birthday cake!

Posted by Cat / October 13, 2006

Well, no. Not exactly. But the McCord Museum of Canadian History in downtown Montreal IS 85 years old and has lots of neat stuff that is even older! And you can see alot of that neat stuff FOR FREE this weekend.

The Museum takes on a festive air this Saturday & Sunday, October 14 & 15, in honour of its 85th birthday. The McCord invites Montrealers to take part in two full days of festivities. To celebrate the event, visitors are invited to participate in a collective work entitled "Happy Birthday McCord!" which will take the form of a huge cake made up of little greeting cards that visitors have created themselves.

Don't worry, there will be real cake as well, and I'm pretty sure it will be relatively fresh and tasty. Cake gets served in the afternoon.

In addition, museum-goers can participate in workshops and activities related to the current exhibitions (Simply Montreal, Growing up in Montreal, Robert Davidson—The Abstract Edge, and Haida Art: Mapping an Ancient Language), as well as touring these exhibitions. While you're there, take a short a detour to McGill College Avenue to view the Transactions exhibition, which ends October 16 and features magnificent images of objects from the McCord collections as well as photographs from the renowned Notman Photographic Archives. The colour close-ups of such collection highlights as a vintage phonograph, a glass firescreen, and Maurice "Rocket" Richard's hockey jersey are truly stunning. This is also the last weekend for the Robert Davidson exhibition which features recent works by this contemporary Haida artist.

So party like it's 1921! Admission and activities are free. The Museum will be open from 10am to 5pm., and is located at 690 Sherbrooke Street West, between University and Victoria.

Hi NoHaus, while I am not as happy to see Jani go, she was playing a less than stelalr game. I agree she kept it classy, but enjoyed that she was able to get in a dig to Boogie on live TV. Boogies goodbye message was ballsy & brutal. It made for good TV.It took Frank & Boogie a nano second to talk about putting up Dan & or Brit next week. Tsk tsk will they never learn, dance with the devil you will get burnt.ITA Shane is plaing a great game. Not going for the obvious showmance was his best move. Ian, loving him. He is laying very low for such a huge fan & it's probably killing him. I think he is all about the experience & a pleasure to watch. He is no Ronnie & should go far. I want to see him win enough money to pay for rent until he is finished with school. He is so getting my vote for fav houseguest. Britt should want nothing to do with another mostly male alliance, but she is in survival mode. Britt's tears were genuine on the live feeds, I wish she wasn't so nice. Good thing Dani was there to remind her that Jani was soooo nasty to her Everytime I see Ashley/Jenn/Joe all I hear in my head is no scrubs ! Lisa
