City of singles

Montreal, you're stressed out. We think we have the good life here: euro feel, cheap rents, more food than you can shake a stick at, but in a stress line-up, Montrealers edge out Torontonians, Reginians and even Haligonians. We beat them all.

Perhaps it's got something to do with being single. Fifteen per cent of us live alone, compared with Toronto's eight per cent and Vancouver's 11 per cent. We scramble for apartments and struggle with rising rents, which we pay for with less money. (Yes, they used to be cheap, but recently one-bedroom apartments - for all those singles - lacking eau de chat and peeling paint have been going for $750-$900 in the plateau, and landlords are fielding 50 calls or more in a single day of advertising.)

Break-ups and make-ups send rents spiraling upwards as lone renters hit the streets to look for apartments. (Three years ago, while looking for apartments I was beat out by women who had bought condos with their chums only to break up within months of moving in.)

But the upside to living in a singledom is availability. Striking men hand out business cards to young women at bus stops, and 1 becomes 1+1 quickly, although it may be short-lived, just to restore the balance.

Love the use of the word "chums." Also, "eau de chat."
