Ad Trucks: Mission Unimpossible?

Posted by John / December 12, 2006

In Montreal, a city that prides itself in its hedonistic reputation, it seems fitting that the streets are patrolled by pollution-spewing trucks that do nothing else but chauffeur around poorly designed oversized ads for crappy nightclubs. What's not to like?

Oh right: everything. Enter Uberculture, an activist group with deeply-rooted aesthetic sensibilities (they also put on the Cinema Politica film series about which I occasionally post), who are ready to take on the trucks and free up some downtown road space for more urban-wear-clad lotharios in pimped-out SUVs. (Actually, Uberculture probably doesn't like the SUVs either, but, seriously, have you noticed how many Escalades there are on Ste. Catherine St.?)

This isn't the first time Uberculture has mounted an anti-ad-truck campaign, although the last one wasn't as ambitious. And as this article from Spacing notes, other groups have tried to do something before as well, but with poor results.

Indeed, Spacing cites the city's fear that an attempt to enforce existing bylaws wouldn't stand up in court, and would effectively legalize something currently at least illegal on paper. This is the explanation I've heard from a few different sources over the years, and so I'm somewhat skeptical about the chances of actually getting these vehicles off the streets. But I'd love to see it happen.

Then we go after the Escalades.

Hey, that's not a photo of Montreal, there are palm trees in the background :)

Well, nowhere do I claim that the photo is of Montreal. It's definitely of ad trucks, though. Um, the Mtl. photo is pending a trip to downtown with camera, which, given holiday shopping season, isn't something I'm itching to do. But, in the interest of blog photo accuracy, I will. Fine.

From the looks of it, it's San Diego in the photo.

I guess any attempt on my part to stop people from talking about the photo, since the photo's not the point, will just cause more people to talk about the photo. Oh well, I submit to my fate. You jackasses.
