Montréal en Lumière: Old Montreal and the Old Port Piers

melmp.jpgIf you're like me, you only enjoy winter a few days each year. Hopefully, Nuit Blanche (also known as the All-Nighter) is one of those days --er, nights. All night, as part of the Montreal High Lights festival, free activities will be held in three districts (Old-Port, Downtown, and Plateau Mont-Royal) from March 1st at 8 p.m. to March 2nd at 4 a.m.

Here's a list of some standout activities happening in Old Montreal and the Old Port Piers.

Outdoor activities:
Les Feux d'Hiver Loto-Québec

The 5th Montreal All-Nighter will kick off with Loto-Quebec's famous multicolor extravaganza from the heart of Old Montreal.
Free - 8 p.m.
Quays of the Old Port (Champs-de-Mars metro)

La Patinoire et le Bar d'Hiver des Quais du Vieux-Port / Skating Rink and Winter Bar
The city's most innovative bar will be open all night and feature DJ Mini with a blast of music, while you skate your feet off on the frozen Bassin Bonsecours.
Free (places limited) - 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. (Winter Bar) and 10 a.m. (skating rink)

La Glissade Le Lait
Picture a perfectly stable, perfectly safe and perfectly cold ice slide that's 120 meters long. Now picture your half-frozen butt sliding all the way on it. Pretty exciting, yeah?

Kaleidoscope - Guided tour of Old Montreal Hotels and Shops
Discover Old Montreal in a whole new light - the night light! A Professional guide shall walk you around to visit the splendors of its architecture, inside and out. The tour lasts 90 minutes.
$15 (reservations required) - 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Baignade sous les Étoiles
Come swim under the stars and admire the scenery from the Hilton Hotel's outdoor pool. Lockers and towels included. Bistro bar on location open until 2 a.m. for light meals.
$8 (reservations required, tickets on sale at hotel reception desk) - 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Les Spectacles Hydro Québec: Christopher Williams

Follow Christopher Williams through his imaginary hallucinations, where originality meets insanity, and let the host become comedian.

Les Années Disco à l'Hôtel de Ville
Disco? Disco! If you're into the shiny years, then look no further. City Hall, one of Montreal's most prestigious buildings, is hosting this all-night dance party featuring the best music of the Disco Years.

Glass Blowing a-go-go
Have you ever seen glass-blowing action live? I have, and it's pretty fascinating. If you ever feel up to it, the hottest studio in town offers live demonstrations and performances to the sound of "excellent music". The boutique will also be open all night.

Argentine Tango: Lessons and Demonstration
Studio TANGO is holding three beginner-level Tango classes, followed by a short demo given by professional dancers. Don't forget your dance shoes!

Gospel Heat
Warm up to the lively rhythms of gospel music in Montreal's oldest stone chapel.

Science, on veille!

Visit the Montreal Science Center (ISCI) and explore the new experience "Science 26" (whatever that means). Exhibitions like Odyssey of Light and Salt Essentials will also be open to the public.

A Night on Mars
Montreal is overrated - let's spend the night on Mars instead. Aside from the Earth, it is the most likely to harbor life, albeit not in the form of little green men. What will the Phoenix space mission find on the Red Planet? Come see for yourself!

Rocket Richard - the Legend, the Legacy
Calling to all sport buffs and hockey enthusiasts! Come relive the career highlights of Maurice "Rocket" Richard and find out how he helped shape society in the 40's and 50's.

Splendors of Existence - Carlito Dalceggio
Come join artist Carlito Dalceggio in his voyage to the depths of the universe, where the trajectory of birds meets the flight of butterflies in a perpetual motion.

Contes d'antan at Pointe-à-Callières
Explore New-France and exhibitions such as Where Montreal was Born and 1837-1838: Rebellions. Storytellers on site will charm and amuse you with their tales of the conquered territory.

Kiosque Le Lait à l'Érable

Enjoy tasty maple products all night at this kiosk, and make sure you give the maple syrup-flavored hot milk a try for me.

Nuit Blanche au bistro SAQ
After some skating at the rink, why not hit the bar and enjoy some wine or a flavored coffee? The SAQ offers tasting menus for festivalgoers, for a small charge per refreshment.
