Metro Roulette: Place des Arts

Posted by Amelia / July 15, 2009

20090715pda.jpgWhat with the Jazz Festival taking over the area for the past couple weeks, it's likely that you've taken the train to Place des Arts recently and spent some time walking the streets around the station. But even though the festival is packing its bags, there's no reason to say goodbye to this part of the city until next July. Herewith, a walking tour of the neighbourhood, in the hopes of getting you a little more acquainted with things even when the outdoor stages and eateries disappear.

On a nice Saturday morning, start the day off by walking north from Place des Arts station on rue Bleury to rue Milton, which is one block north of Sherbrooke. Turn right and walk a couple blocks to the fabulously greasy breakfast joint called Place Milton (220 rue Milton). For the healthier among us, vegetarian mainstay Lola Rosa (545 Milton) has a brunch on weekends that never disappoints.

20090715theword.jpgRe-energize post-breakfast with a bit of a stroll along the McGill ghetto's quiet (at this hour), tree-lined streets. The literary set will enjoy stopping in at the Word (469 Milton), a lovely used bookshop that's easy to browse and has a great selection. For design-minded folks, there's Nota Bene (3416 avenue du Parc), a papeterie slash gallery. The downstairs houses a well-curated inventory of beautiful paper goods, while the artwork upstairs rotates frequently enough to ensure that repeat visits are always interesting.

From here, take your newly-purchased book or journal and find a place to sit and enjoy it. Head back south a few blocks to the Place des Arts steps, or west to the green spaces on the McGill campus. Picnic supplies can be found at either Marche Lobo (3509 Parc) or Eden (in the La Cite complex at Parc and Prince Arthur). Or, pick up croissants and such at the Patisserie Belge (3485 Parc) on the way. If you're still around come sundown, have a drink at super-slick wine bar Pullman (3424 Parc) to end the evening well, before your quick walk down the hill to the metro, and home.

I also want to suggest a nice bar that opened up last year (I think) on Bleury right below Ste-Catherine. It's called Nyk and they are closest thing to a classier bar/pub outside the old port in that side of town.

At this time it looks like Wordpress is the preferred blogging platform
available right now. (from what I've read) Is that
what you are using on your blog?

I almost never comment, however after looking at a few of the remarks on Metro Roulette: Place des
Arts. I do have some questions for you if you do not mind.
Could it be just me or does it seem like a few of these responses come across as if they are written by brain dead folks?
:-P And, if you are posting at additional social sites, I would like to keep up with you.

Would you post a list of the complete urls of all your shared sites like your linkedin profile, Facebook page
or twitter feed?
