St. Patrick's Day Parade 2011: A Photographic Commentary

Posted by Andrés / March 20, 2011

20110320_patricksday10b.jpgFor such a small nation, the Irish have managed to ingratiate themselves to the world with much success. Montréal has a long history with the Irish, stemming back from the Great Famine. With much in common with the local French (read: religion), families were quick to adopt Irish youngsters, and with them their ways and traditions. We've all seen that Heritage minute, right? While St. Patrick's Day is the worst kind of commercialism, Montréal's rendition is one of the largest in the world, and is nonetheless a great day out for families. Especially on a beautiful day like today.

It's a time for everyone to show a little bit of Irish spirit:

Or a lot:

When man's best friend can come out of the closet and scream to the world, "Kiss Me, I'm Irish!"

The parade had its usual Queen:

Despite Ireland's lack of a monarchy, trumpets blazed for her.

And bands marched.

This year's parade had fewer floats than last year's. The few that went by were filled with people dancing to dance renditions of Irish folk music... or Michael Jackson. The two are pretty interchangeable, I guess.

While there were a few appearances of some genuine Irish-related clubs and activities, such as this hurler...

... there was also some blatant non-Irish advertising. Wasn't this West Jet balloon also in the Canada Day and St-Jean-Baptiste parade?

(And I don't think the Irish would appreciate Sir Churchill's appearance)

There were a few instances of fighter jets flying by and shaking the ground, giving us all a feel for what Libya must be going through. And in case the military presence hadn't been felt enough, we also got to see some kids with guns.20110320_patricksday16.jpg

In all, the parade was as much a success as previous years. The sun helped. And the crowds were there. So was the Church. Somehow, the tradition of reveling in Irish popular mythology continues to thrive. Slàinte!

See you next year, Guinness gut!
