Maisonneuve Magazine Spring Issue Launch at Le Divan Orange, Tuesday, April 5th

Posted by Amie / April 3, 2011

Maisonneuve Magazine Spring LaunchThis Tuesday at Le Divan Orange the locally produced quarterly, Maisonneuve Magazine, will launch its Spring issue. $8 gets you a copy of the glossy plus an evening of poetry from the issue's featured poet, Roland Pemberton (aka Cadence Weapon, aka Edmonton's poet laureate), and live music from The Youjsh, Flow Child, and Wind-Up People.

Maisonneuve is a rare breed - a smart, sleek, magazine for all ages, where journalists are still permitted and encouraged to publish long pieces that really get into the meat of an issue, such as the cover feature, "We Felt No Mercy," written by Naheed Mustafa. Not your average war story about Afghanistan, Mustafa puts you in the shoes of a kid who becomes a mujahid and looks at how and why the country became what it is today. Sounds like every other news story? Mustafa takes you on a much more emotional ride than what you get out of reading the political analysis of the war history coming from news sources on either side of the world.

In the Playroom, the edition's photo essay by 2010 RBC Emerging Artist Award-winner Jonathon Hobin, features colour-intensive shots of innocence juxtaposed with political, economic, and violent themes. Kids knocking over twin tower building blocks with deadpan faces is pretty creepy.

But the magazine isn't all heavy; the diversity draws you in, just as with the evening's entertainment that will jump from upbeat imaginary folk music of the Youjsh to the sticky, slurpy sounds of Pop Winds member Kyle Jukka's solo project, Flow Child.

The rest of the magazine covers the inner workings of Google SEO, what professional athletes do when they grow up, and an essay on Canadian Immigration law and how ridiculous it can be that this country's citizens are allowed to gallivant just about anywhere in the world, but the friends we meet on those travels may not be able to ever be guests in our own homes.

For more on the magazine and the upcoming launch, here's an interview I did with Maisonneuve editor-in-chief Drew Nelles:
