PINKARNAVAL: A Jean Paul Gaultier-Inspired Spectacle

Posted by Tara / July 10, 2011

PinkarnavalUnless you've been living under a rock recently, you probably know that there is a Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition currently on show at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. But what you may not know, is that this coming weekend the streets of Montreal will host PINKARNAVAL - A parade and outdoor event dedicated to Jean Paul Gaultier.

PINKARNAVAL was born with the intention to connect Montrealers with their city's artists, and plays on Gaultier's street-inspired designs by bringing this show to the streets - literally. The humourous fashion-themed parade will actually be made up of more than 1600 Montrealers who have volunteered and have been training with artists and choreographers over the past few months to put on this show.

Like the museum exhibition, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier - From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, PINKARNAVAL will also display a number of diverse eras and styles of Gaultier's work. There will be eight separate scenes, each created by a different Montreal borough, with the exception of one - which is the work of creative visual artists hailing from Lyon, France. Each of these eight parts of PINKARNAVAL are distinct, and different dances, outfits, and artwork will be a part of every one. There'll be crazy make up, insane costumes, and crowds dancing in the streets - sounds like a good time to me.

The Lyonnaise portion of PINKARNAVAL will feature street theatre performer La Belle Zanka and her troupe, who perform outdoor urban circus-style shows in fantastical costumes, often on stilts.

La Belle Zanka PinkarnavalThe PNKARNAVAL event is twofold - The parade itself takes place on Saturday, July 16th, at 7.30pm, and will start at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts on Sherbrooke Street, turn down Crescent, and then continue along St. Catherine's Street until it reaches the Quartier des Spectacles.

On Sunday July 17th, at 9pm, the PINKARNAVAL show, entitled 'Le Grand Baiser' takes place at the Place des Festivals, in which each of the eight separate homages to Gaultier and his work will be performed on stage. This is followed by the nautically-themed 'Striped Ball,' where Jean Paul Gaultier model Ève Salvail aka DJ Evalicious will be playing - striped attire is recommended and rumour is that Gaultier himself will be attending.

PinkarnavalPINKARNAVAL is the first of a number of events that will take place as part of the Just for Laughs Outdoor Events. Some of the other happenings include life-size board games, an assortment of unusual-sounding gymnasts and acrobats, and a slew of other events - visit Just for Laughs Outdoor Events for more details.

More information about PINKARNAVAL can be found on their website.

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier - From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk runs at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts until October 2nd.
