Montreal Sketch Fest at Theatre Ste-Catherine, until Saturday
Why do I even write posts? A video like this one does a better job of getting bums in chairs at Montreal's upcoming Sketch Comedy Fest at Theatre Ste-Catherine. Stuff this video almost teaches you: 1. What a juicy stinger is 2. How to milk a delicious awkward silence 3. How to annoy French comfort food 4. How to steal lights from Centaur Theatre. All are clearly essential life skills.
You once put a juicy stinger on a what? Slow-cook that fade-out? I hope I never know so much about blinkin' lights.
There I go again with the laughter that wakes up my neighbours. Ostie, Sandi Armstrong is amazing. I don't watch sitcoms. I would start if she wrote one. No, maybe not, but I'd definitely check her out at Theater Ste-Catherine next week. It's only $12 per show, and the beer is better than what's currently in my fridge. Besides, when I drink a beer from my fridge profits don't go to hilarious people. Think anyone ever cracks a joke at Molson? I catered a BBQ there once. Nary a joke cracked. Note, I did not actually buy the beer in my fridge. It was gifted to me, which is why it's still sitting in my fridge and not my belly.
With four sketch troupes per night (8pm) and a second late night show with four more troupes Thursday through Saturday at 10:30pm (Sunday is All-star Improv night - not part of the fet, but definitely worth checking out once you're all sketch-ed out), $12 is the least you'll pay to laugh harder than you have in awhile, well, since Peter Steven's show.
These are the grinders, comedians who live, breathe and eat (apparently) comedy. Normally, I'd say I'd prefer a piece of cake, but I'm going to fore go that cake in favour of seeing Pete Steven's sketch troupe Elephant Empire on Friday (May 25, 10:30pm). He's based out of Toronto now, but as a former Theatre Ste-Catherine artist in residence, we should welcome him back.
Elephant Empire - playing Friday, May 25th at 10:30pm
Other sketchfest participants include Calgary's El Jaguar (on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday), Studious Poets out of Saskatchewan and Halifax on Monday, and the Best of the Fest show on Saturday at 10:30 where troupes will be awarded prizes. But really, just choose any night and go.
