Written and directed by Julia Ainsworth

Montreal – Until 1995 the only federal penitentiary for women in Canada was the Prison for Women (P4W). Notorious for the countless human rights violations that took place within its walls over the course of its 70-year history, the Archambault Commission once described P4W as “unfit for bears, let alone women.”

In September 2011, as our federal government advocates harsher sentencing and expands our prison system, Unfit For Bears goes beyond the walls of P4W and into the hearts and minds of the women who experienced it first hand.

Written and directed by Julia Ainsworth, this brave new production invites us to find hope and dignity within a brutal and degrading prison culture. By daring to examine, expose and imagine the realities of the Canadian Justice System, Unfit For Bears trespasses beyond the red tape and bureaucracy that has buried the voices and stories of Canada’s incarcerated women.
