Join us for this special event with author and activist Dean Spade, founder of the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, a non-profit law collective that provides free legal services to transgender, intersex and gender non-conforming people who are low-income and/or people of color.

ABOUT NORMAL LIFE:
Much of the legal advocacy for trans and gender nonconforming people in the US has reflected the civil rights and “equality" strategies of mainstream gay and lesbian organizations—agitating for legal reforms. This approach assumes that the state and its legal, policing, and social services apparatus are neutral and benevolent. Normal Life: Administrative Violence, Critical Trans Politics and the Limits of Law raises revelatory critiques of the current strategies pivoting solely on a legal rights framework, but also points to examples of an organized grassroots trans movement that is demanding the most essential of legal reforms in addition to making more comprehensive interventions into dangerous systems of repression—and the administrative violence that ultimately determines our life chances. Setting forth a politic that goes beyond the quest for mere legal inclusion, Normal Life is an urgent call for justice and trans liberation, and the radical transformations it will require.

ABOUT DEAN SPADE:
An attorney, educator, and trans activist Dean Spade has taught classes on sexual orientation, gender identity, poverty and law at the City University of New York (CUNY), Seattle University, Columbia University, and Harvard University. In 2002 he founded the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, a collective that provides free legal services and works to build trans resistance rooted in racial and economic justice.

Aux États-Unis, une partie importante de la défense des droits des personnes trans ou au genre non conforme reflète la stratégie de droits civils et d'« égalité » des organismes gais et lesbiens, se bornant à l'agitation pour obtenir une réforme législative. Cette stratégie présume de la neutralité et de la bienveillance de l'appareil juridique, policier et social de l'État. Normal Life: Administrative Violence, Critical Trans Politics and the Limits of Law, d'une part, se veut une vive critique des stratégies actuelles qui s'articulent uniquement autour d'un cadre juridique des droits et, d'autre part, fournit des exemples d'un mouvement trans, populaire et organisé, qui revendique une réforme législative des plus essentielles en plus d'intervenir de plus en plus globalement contre les systèmes répressifs dangereux et contre la violence systémique. Allant au-delà de la quête pour la simple inclusion juridique, Normal Life est un appel vibrant à la justice et à la libération trans, ainsi qu'à la transformation radicale nécessaire pour y parvenir.

Avocat, éducateur populaire et activiste trans, Dean Spade a enseigné des cours traitant d'orientation et d'identité sexuelle, de pauvreté et de droit à la City University of New York (CUNY), à l'Université de Seattle, à l'Université Columbia et à l'Université Harvard. En 2002, il a fondé le collectif Sylvia Rivera Law Project, qui offre des services juridiques gratuits aux personnes trans et intersexuées et qui participe à la construction d'un mouvement de résistance trans ancré dans la justice raciale et économique.
