Duets for Abdelrazik is a cultural project aiming to express musical solidarity for the ongoing struggle of Abousfian Abdelrazik, a Sudanese-Canadian jailed on the recommendation of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) in Sudan. It is difficult to describe in words both the horror of torture but also the sustained determination by Abdelrazik in the struggle for justice. Stefan Christoff is a Montreal based musician, writer and community activist.
Peter Burton is a Montreal based community arts organizer and excellent contrabass player with a focus on contemporary free jazz modes. Burton is also deeply involved in the Suoni per il Popolo festival, an inspiring community based alternative musical festival working to deepen connections between the arts and social justice struggles.
Rebecca Foon is a composer and contemporary cellist who has worked and recorded with various artists including Silver Mt. Zion, Patti Smith, Tom Verlaine, Lhasa de Sela, Patrick Watson, Tanya Tagaq, Set Fire to Flames, British Sea Power, Little Scream, Vic Chesnutt and Carla Bozulich. She has worked on and composed various soundtracks including the documentary film H2Oil. She is a member of the band Esmerine and MELSA and co-founder of Madrona Records. Radwan Ghazi Moumneh is a composer, filmmaker, co-owner and producer at Hotel 2 Tango recording studio, Radwan alias Jerusalem in My Heart merges playful, innovative and experimental elements with Arab trance and “psych” as well as contemporary electronic sounds. JIMH has performed in several Montreal festivals and toured extensively in France and the United States. Radwan also recorded the Duets for Abdelrazik project at Hotel 2 Tango.
Norman Nawrocki is a Montreal cabaret artist, violinist, actor and educator. He has written several theatre musicals and cabarets and recorded over 50 music albums, solo and with his diverse bands (e.g., Rhythm Activism, DaZoque!, Bakunin’s Bum, etc.). He is the author of a collection of short stories, The Anarchist & The Devil Do Cabaret, and several poetry collections (Breakfast for Anarchists, Lunch for Insurgents, Dinner for Dissidents, Rebel Moon, etc.). He tours the world performing music, poetry, anti-sexist ‘sex’ comedy shows, and giving ‘Creative Resistance’ workshops about how to use the arts for radical social change. Sam Shalabi is a celebrated musician and composer currently based in Cairo, Egypt, who will be performing a solo set on the Oud and also a duet track from Duets for Abdelrazik. Shalabi, one of Montreal’s most unique and prolific players over the past decade explores everything from classical Egyptian music to free-form psych-rock.
