Chip Dip: What the hell, Doritos?

Posted by Chip / November 15, 2006

chipschair.gifWith this weekend’s Grey Cup festivities quickly upon us, and with your hometown team in the big game, you will undoubtedly be shopping for some chips over the next few days.

And yes, the chip dip has been on hiatus for a while, but that’s not to say that chips haven’t been consumed during its absence, but rather, there has been little inspiration provided by the potato or corn chip industry. This, after a flurry of flavour invention this past summer.

All my recent discontent was quickly erased however, during a recent trip through upstate New York. (You can always leave it to northern New York to provide you with the latest innovation in chip flavour. It’s like there’s a test market there. And I’m sure it’s because of the abundance and density of Buffalo Bills fans in the area. Them, or Giants fans, but really, either work in this case where the fresh, shiny new bag of Doritos I came face to face with was the colour of Bill/Giant blue.)

While driving back through Glens Falls, I was forced to make a stop for gas. And since I forget the name of the convenience store attached to the gas station, let’s just refer to it as the Quickie Mart. This Quickie Mart must have anticipated my arrival as they had freshly stocked their chip rack and centered it in front of the sliding entry doors. My eye was immediately drawn to the NEW tag emblazoned on the top left corner of a blue bag of Doritos. Obviously, this was not Cool Ranch – the blue wasn’t right. Shifting my wide-eyed glance downward towards the center of the bag, I was able to make out four words flaming across from left to right, ‘Blazin’ Buffalo and Ranch’.

Ok, Buffalo and Ranch I can understand, but what did the Blazin’ have to do with anything? Nonetheless, the bag was sold and I began cleansing my palette in preparation.

I can’t believe what I’m about to write, but, Doritos, what the hell? It’s time to stop making ridiculous flavours that go nowhere. The BB&R might have worked if it weren’t for the incessant coughing produced from their ingestion. It seemed that in an attempt to put as much flavour powder on their chips as possible, Doritos had forgotten to adhere the powder to the chips properly. To make sure that it wasn’t just me, I made an accomplice try…again coughing. I came back at the bag the next day for a fresh start…more coughing, though more controlled (I compare my experience to a first timer eating Hot and Sour soup – if the first bite isn’t taken right, you will be coughing and unable to eat the remainder of your meal with any enjoyment).

Sure, I may have exaggerated just a little. In between throat clearing, I was able to get some proper tasting in. And to be fair, the chips did provide a certain tanginess that was pleasant and not reminiscent of any other Doritos. Once I added guacamole into the mix, there was no problem finishing the bag off. Unfortunately, the fact that guacamole was needed is a clear indication that this will not be my first choice next time I’m around the Quickie Mart.

Oh, and it doesn’t appear as though this particular flavour is available in Canada yet. I guess that means you’ll have to go out of your way to try it, but you probably shouldn’t. Next time: I try to get my hands on Taco flavoured chips.

Ha! How great is the photo of the bag artfully displayed against your throw pillows?

Man. I really want to try these now. It's been a while since I've had a good ol' fashion chip induced cough-fest.

I honestly think that they could start selling chips like this at upscale furniture would be a whole new market for junk food.
