Lonely Hearts Video Club: DVD Pick

Ridiculously, Thumbsucker and The Chumscrubber came to the video store at roughly the same time, both offering tales of crumbling suburban family life.

Forever, the two will be confused in my mind. For now, I will recommend the latter--Thumbsucker. I think. No, that's right, thats' the one.

You should check out Thumbsucker. You could certainly do worse. And tucking in for the night is one fine way to avoid the rain and cold that is taking place in the winter redux going on outside.

The Squid And The Whale, You Me And Everyone We Know, and Thumbsucker are all obviously influenced by the low rent, small-scale of early 90s American independent cinema (think Hal Hartley) but they also look and feel and completely fresh, carving out the beginnings of a new American cultural zeitgeist.

While none of the three films are going to rewrite the book on cinema style, or even add a new index entry, they do manage to be humourous, intelligent, and painfully insightful, eschewing irony and cynicism for a slightly jaded but nonetheless willing embrace of the joy and wonder that will come to us—if only we stop expecting it.

Check out the film for its perfect sense of space and high school personalities, and for its impeccable performances by its odd assortment of cast members, including a memorable piece by Vince Vaughn as Mr. Geary, the high school's debat team coach.

In the gaggle of today’s funnymen, who is going to prove staying power is still up in the air, but the wise money should be sitting on Vaughn. He has not had the responsibility to carry a movie single-handedly yet and The Break >Up looks heinously unwatchable, but as a character actor he is fantastic—and that’s a talent that will last forever. His turn in Thumbsucker is one of the best things he has done.

And when will be your next chance to see Vince Vaughn and Tilda Swintonin the same film?

I'm impressed, I have to admit. Seldom do I encounter a blog that's equally
educative and engaging, and without a doubt, you have hit the nail
on the head. The problem is something which too few people are
speaking intelligently about. Now i'm very happy I found this during my hunt for something regarding
this.
