Can can at World Film Fest

If you do not plan to spend the whole weekend Oshea-ga-ga-ing, you might be pleased to know there are still a few days left to catch great flics at the FFM (World Film Festival, en english). There are plenty of cool docs and fiction films to check out and 'can con' to boot. ('can con' means 'canadian content' by the way, but it always seems pejorative to me, so here's some good 'can can'.)

Wal Town is a doc about six student activists who travel to thirty-six Canadian towns to face off against that giant behemoth of cheap shit, Walmart.

In John Paskievich's documentary he tackles a problem he's had his whole life. He makes clear how stuttering sssssucks. Unspeakable delves into the everyday trauma of stuttering. Here's an interview with Paskievich about the ways in which our perception of stuttering needs to change.

Alanis Obomsawin's film WABAN-AKI: People from Where the Sun Rises features the Abenaki people of Quebec, the Maritimes and New England. The film follows four Abenaki people living in the director's community of Odenak in Quebec.

I met Faisal Lutchmedial at some television broadcaster schmooze fest. Television hire-ups have a way of sucking the passion from anyone. So i was happy to meet Faisal, a first time director trying to find a broadcaster for his film, My Cultural Divide, a very personal/political doc about global trade, sweat shops and his first visit to Bangladesh - his mother's native country. Turns out his film is now making the rounds on the film fest circuit and he's contributing to CITIZENshift, an online media site dedicated to social change. Faisal toiled for years putting the whole thing together and this, his first feature doc, is truly a labour (pardon the pun) of love. So check it out.

Bonnie Sherr Klein, (who made what all Feminist 101ers will remember as the film about porn they were forced to watch and only later critique), Not a Love Story: A Film About Pornography, has since switched gears. Disability rights and activism are the topics of her latest film, Shameless. It sounds intense - Klein suffered from a brainstem stroke which inspired the film. You can read about the director (infamous in a very Canadian way) in the Straight.

Since we're on the topic of porn. No we were talking disability. But porn before that. I was very sorry to have missed promoting Slippery Slope, because the director Sarah Schenck seemed very lovely (it screened last weekend). I'll tell you about it anyway. Sarah Schenck directed this romp about porn and yes, clearly another favourite topic of mine, feminism. I guess the protagonist of this film (fiction) is a feminist doc maker who turns to the porn biz to make money to finish her latest film and discovers hidden truths about her own deep dark sexuality. Luckily we can all watch the trailer for her movie and hope it gets wider release someday.

All the films I've just listed still have screenings at the fest (except Slippery Slope), so to check 'em out at the Montreal World Film Festival site.

When someone writes an article he/she maintains the image of a user in his/her brain that how
a user can be aware of it. Thus that's why this article is great.
Thanks!
