If a film about the struggles of an all-girl high school punk rock band isn’t endearing enough, make it a film about a Japanese all-girl high school punk rock band and you’ve hit the pachinko-pot. Japanese filmmaker Nobuhiro Yamashita comes out a winner with his fourth film, Linda Linda Linda, a project that speaks to audiences both young and old.

When Moe, the guitarist and lead singer of Shiba High’s all girl punk rock band, breaks her finger shortly before the school festival, the rest of the band, Kei, Kyoko, and Nozumi are forced to come up with an alternate plan. To spite Rinko, the obvious choice for a replacement, Kei decides to recruit Son, a shy Korean exchange student to be their new lead vocalist. With only days till the festival, the girls cram in all-night practices, all the while dealing with the everyday dramas that come with teenage territory.

As a coming-of-age flick, there is, of course, another more profound message to Linda Linda Linda. As the film opens, a Japanese school-girl contemplates the child’s transition to adulthood. She wonders how it is that the child could ever disappear once that child becomes an adult. Eventually she concludes that the child never really disappears -- in other words, we all have that youthful innocence in us somewhere. This underlying message is perhaps what makes this film so endearing. Linda Linda Linda is a portrait of the days of youth when dreams were vast and potential was unlimited – when only days before a performance you dared to put a band together and give it your all. “Gambaro,” which is a typical Japanese saying for “Let’s do our best” is a phrase that is repeated throughout the film.

Linda Linda Linda is a tribute to saying “F*%# it,” and going out and having the time of your life anyway. And really, is there any other way to salute punk rock? You are guaranteed to walk out of the theatre with a smile on your face, bopping your head, and singing under your breath Linda Linda, Linda Linda Lindaaaaaa-aaaa ... You’ll see.
