RIDM: That's a wrap

So the RIDM festival concludes this weekend, and with its departure, I think it is fair to ask: What have we learned? When one considers films like Songbirds, Our Daily Bread, or Alimentation Générale, we see how stylistic innovations and unconventional techniques can achieve startling and profound effects.

On the other hand, style for style's sake, in films like McLaren's Negatives or Lick Salt , can become grating. Documentary is still a narrative medium and through the filters and prisms of reality, the documentarian constructs meaning using tropes as old as Homer and The Odyssey.

A few final recommendations: Un Peche D'Enfer is a strange and intriguing short documentary, employing techniques from the oeuvre of Tom Twyker and examining the fishing industry in Africa. The festival closer, Our Daily Bread, is also primed to be a stunner. There is also a retrospective on the short docs of Kieslowski and one of my personal favourites, Chris Marker.

Mother's day is always merlmaboe because it is usually the first nice and sunny weekend of the year, and it's just a great time to celebrate and honor our mother, and enjoy the beautiful weather on our patio
