Ho Ho Ho...now eat lead, motherf--cker.

That's the kind of christmas spirit I can get into. Now, before you all judge me as some monstrous grinchy scrooge, I'll admit that I weep whenever I watch Charlie Brown Christmas, It's a Wonderful Life, or even The Bells of St. Marys. (I actually sobbed a little while watching the It's a Wonderful Life clip just now).

But still, the Christmas season is nauseating with its excessive decorations, carols, shopping mania, and packaged Coca Cola visions of daddy Santa Claus in the north pole (personally, I find the guy a little creepy).

So I kind of relish the idea of a Black Christmas, a theme that we are taking up this December at Film Club. Starting tomorrow at Boa Modern Taverne (5301 St. Laurent), we'll begin our programme with John Woo's The Killer. Free admission. Popcorn and drinks available. Drop by after 8:30.

Of course it isn't really a Christmas movie. But John Woo's masterpiece (before he began sucking ass) is really the story of a modern day Jesus Christ (the criminal of the story even has the same initials). The story of a criminal with a conscience and an obsessed cop with a fierce sense of loyalty, is so biblical that it even has a plotline about giving sight to the blind.

Of course this movie influenced everyone from Scorsese to Tarrentino. Style is on display here. Slow motion shots extraordinare, swiveling camera movements, grandiouse set pieces. This is the Hong Kong action film as an operatic passion play.

If that doesn't turn your water into wine, I don't know what will.

And as for all you studio heads and film distributors wondering about rights et al...I'll be right with you after I talk to to Chow Yung Fat at this church over here... (I promise to retire this joke in the new year).

Other films playing this month include: Jesus of Montreal, The Nightmare Before Christmas and of course, A Christmas story. Yep, have a violent christmas from your friends at Film Club.

It's nice to see someone putting the "Christ don't kill me please oh god please I big you I've got kids!" back in Christmas.

That said, I've applied for a second mortgage. If that comes through I should be joining you tomorrow.

My Dad was born in Canada and most of his family is still there. I have taken many trips to visit. Toronto is a fuaulobs big city, with clean/easy to navigate subways and nice people. And Vancouver is a very "West Coast" type of (smaller) city. Beautiful, green, lots to do and see. Again, very nice people. Canadians are nice people, in general. :)
