Long Live Inland Empire!

Posted by Omar / May 3, 2007

Inland.jpgMan, am I excited. Excited, you say? What would get you so hot and bothered that you, possibly the most lethargic being in the Milky Way, would want to blog to your fellow Montrealers?

Finally, there exists the possibility of seeing a potentially great art film. How I envy the cinéphiles of the sixties, catching Godard's Alphaville one week, and then returning next week to see the premiere of Persona, with a midnight screening of El Topo, to boot.

Do you want to know what fine films I've seen in the last month? Reign Over Me, starring Adam Sandler. Admittedly I did tear up when Mr. Sandler talks about losing his wife and daughters on 9/11, but I felt some shame about it (my wife also insists that I feel more and more shame about it).

I also saw Vacancy, which was...pretty vacant. Microwaved Hitchcock at best, Vacancy is way worse than any of the dreaded Psycho sequels. (Somebody make Luke Wilson go on a long hiatus, please? I want to like him again.)

I also saw Mira Nair's The Namesake, which despite being an excellent book is a mediocre film at best – although it is kind of fun to count all the corny voice-overs.

But as of this Friday, the film geek in my will get his ultimate fix - David Lynch's Inland Empire will finally get it's Montreal premiere at the Cinema Du Parc. This self-distributed DV feature promises to be Lynchian at its most inaccessible, and I for one welcome it.

In an age where Scorsese stands atop the glittery stage at the Oscars along with George Lucas, Coppola and Spielberg hamming it up for a lousy Academy Award, or in a time when a masterpiece like Michael Haneke's Cache only gets mentioned in scholarly film journals, it seems the age of the auteur, the cinema artist, has come to an end.

Sure there are great films. Even one or two excellent films, but where is that transcendental film, that makes no bones about trying to be a great work of art. Where is the film that walks with confidence, unafraid to be shocking, difficult, coded and even alienating?

Sin of sins for the movie magicians, n'est pas? It seems the bottom line is always pandering to the fictitious Joe Blow in Milwaukee. With Lynch, this is simply not the case.

The story of Inland Empire, from what I gather, is about a cursed script, Polish people, sitcoms where people dress like rabbits, and as the tagline puts it 'a woman in trouble.'

Like his previous films, Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway, there are multiple characters played by the same actors, parallel worlds converging and themes of identity and construction on display. Lynch also uses his stock and trade favourite actors, Laura Dern (apparently in the spookiest role of her life), Harry Dean Stanton and hosts of oddball character actors taken from his show Twin Peaks.

So let's all go and see art for two and a half hours. We may find it difficult, we may find it ponderous, we may even find it less instantly gratifying than watching Will Ferrell on skates, but damnit, it couldn't possibly be any more of a waste of time than watching Vacancy.

PS. The song playing in the Inland Empire trailer is actually sung by Mr. Lynch himself.
