24 Hours of Free Film @ Cinémathèque québécoise, this Saturday & Sunday
Local film connoisseur Andrés Canella has his finger on the pulse of what's going on in Montreal, and wants you to know, too. He'll be keeping Midnight Poutiners near and far posted on what's going on in movie houses around town, starting with the 24-hour film fest being put on by Cinémathèque québécoise.
First, my apologies for the last line of this paragraph. Second, let me draw your attention to a hot cinema event starting at 10am on Saturday, June 20th. The local Francophone film magazine, 24 Images, in collaboration with the Cinémathèque québécoise, is presenting a full 24 hours of free influential films: from the horrifying surrealist film Un chien andalou by Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel to the quirky and fun NFB classic, The Cat Came Back. Taking place both in the Salle Claude-Jutra screening room as well as in the adjoining Café, this insomniac journey through the history of film is sure to be an eye-opening event.

24 Images wants to host an event that showcases films that bring pleasure to its viewers - be it guttural or sadistic - which would help explain the eclectic roster of films playing over the weekend: Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times, Agnès Varda's Cléo de 5 à 7, Tod Browning's Freaks, and Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, with local and international shorts interspersed. While the program lists films showing in the Salle Claude-Jutra theatre, the Cinémathèque's Café will be showing a rotation of other-genred films over the course of the 24 hours as well.
