After the high-energy mosh-pit that was last night's performance by Think About Life, an extravagant sit down evening in the Old Port may be in the cards - if only for a change from warehouses and beer to cocktails and horse-drawn carriages. Le Balcon is getting an early start on the Halloween season by shifting its on-going silent films series to horror classics such as F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu and eerie Scandinavian documentary Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages.
Du cinéma muet au piano parlant (or, Silent Film to Talking Piano) has been a fairly successful series attempting to transport its audience back to the era of 1920s silent films: to the likes of Chaplin, Keaton and now the chilling hideous beasts that haunted audiences worldwide between the two great wars. As in the swinging decade, the films are accompanied by live music. Le Balcon has recruited pianist Roman Zavada who improvises along with the movements and emotions on screen.
Tonight, October 4th at 8:30pm is Nosferatu, the 1922 classic that simultaneously plagiarized and set the standard for the Dracula myth on celluloid. October 18th at the same time is another 1922 film, Häxan, which documents witchcraft through stylistic animated sequences and reenactments that were so horrific to contemporary audiences that is was banned for years. The show itself is a measly $10, although you can impress your date (or if alone - spoil yourself) to the whole dinner-show experience that includes fusion cuisine, for $40.
The series continues on through November, so check back at Le Balcon regularly for updates on their next films.
