'Talkies' and a silent film for FRIDAY APR 9 to THURSDAY APR 15

The Wild Hunt sounds like a concept a D&D fanatic came up with in a weekend: a group of gamers spend a summer weekend out in the country playing a live-action role-playing game that takes over their real selves and begins endangering the lives of the people playing. It also sounds like the kind of fearful story a paranoid parent may instill in their children about the evils of playing roles. It turns out that director Alexandre Franchi is the former: a D&D fan who took his idea to both the Slamdance and Toronto film festivals and came back with 'best film' prizes. It premieres tonight at both AMC and Cinema du Parc and looks like an unmissable Canadian film event. Check out the trailer at the end of this post.

As an interesting tidbit, the story was inspired by and filmed at The Duchy of Bicolline, a location about two hours outside of Montreal where roleplayers meet up once a year to take part in a live-action D&D style village. The construction of the place is astounding, and the seven-day event in August attracts about 2,000 people every year. Aside from the battle are yearly events such as Tavern, Halloween and Masked Ball parties. Looks like it may make for a great MP series - let us know if you're interested!

A quick rundown of other screenings of note this week: This evening (Friday) at Casa Obscura, check out a screening of Fried Green Tomatoes (dir. Jon Avnet, USA, 1991) about women in the South and their stories of empowerment. (More Info) Musical classic West Side Story (dir. Jerome Robbins & Robert Wise, USA, 1961) plays at the Cinematheque quebecoise on Saturday. (More Info) On Sunday, check out Festival Proje(c)t Y 2010 also at the Cinematheque. This yearly event handpicks the best student short films from local universities (UQAM, Concordia and UdeM) in a 90-minute screening. Not to be missed! (More Info) On Monday, choose Theatre Outremont for your audio-visual thirst: Soif de Pub 2008 showcases the best international commercials of the aforementioned year. (More Info) On Tuesday there's not much of note for repertory cinema; it's cheapy Tuesday at most first-run theaters, so take advantage!

Two strong films end up the week. On Wednesday, as part of the Latin American Film Festival at Cinema du Parc, don't miss Lucrecia Martel's The Headless Woman, critically-acclaimed as one of the best films of 2009. The dreamlike story is simple but effective in conveying a woman's trauma after a car accident and the revelation of what may have happened. (More Info) One of the classics of silent B&W cinema is screening in all its 35mm glory accompanied by live musicians on Thursday. The film is La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc (dir. Carl Dreyer, France, 1928), the images and main performance of which are among the most famous in the history of film. (More Info) That about wraps it up for the coming week. Enjoy the films!
