Repertory house film picks for FRIDAY APR 2 to THURSDAY APR 8

Western film fans and non-fans rejoice: the happy middle-ground films of the genre are being presented in 35mm at Cinémathèque québécoise from April 1st to 28th. As opposed to the traditional Wayne-era Westerns that focused on the glorification and nostalgia of the American frontier; these films from the late 50s to today take a critical or non-affected view of the genre. This week catch The Wild Bunch (1969), The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Heaven's Gate (1980) and Little Big Man (1970), among others.

The Latin-American Film Festival of Montreal starts tonight with opening film The Secret in their Eyes (dir. Juan José Campanella, Argentina, 2009), also winner of this year's Best Foreign-Language Film Academy Award. It's sold out, so you're out of luck if you wanted to see it. Regardless, there are other great films from our detached (geographically not emotionally) neighbours way down South. I recommend The Headless Woman (dir. Lucrecia Martel, Argentina, 2008) and The Maid (dir. Sebastian Silva, Chile, 2009) as alternatives. Their program should shed some light on other films of interest. The festival runs until April 15th.

Friday (tonight) you can also head over to Casa Obscura to watch Jean-Luc Godard's Pierrot le fou. The screening is free. (More Info) Outbreak: Anatomy of a Plague (dir. Jefferson Lewis, Canada 2009) plays at the NFB Cinerobotheque on Saturday and deals with pandemics, using the Montreal 1885 smallpox epidemic as a case study to study the trajectory of modern-day plagues. Considering the unusually sweltering weather on Saturday, and the populated urban locale of the theatre, you can chalk this one up as documentary horror. (More Info)

As a good companion piece to the Cinémathèque québécoise's Western series, check out Neil Diamond's Reel Injun: On the Trail of the Hollywood Indian on Sunday. Studying classic films both within and without the Western genre, the image of Aboriginal peoples in contemporary art is studied. In fact, a section of the film deals with Little Big Man (screening as part of the afore-mentioned series), which was revolutionary in casting a Native in a leading role. The film screens all week. (More Info) "There's a trilogy in my life, an equilateral triangle, shall we say, of Gitanes, alcoholism and girls." This about sums up the life of Serge Gainsbourg, French celebrity. If this sounds interesting to you, check out the biopic of his life, Gainsbourg (dir. Joann Sfar, France, 2010), at various theatres on Monday. (More Info)

Probably my pick for most interesting screening this week would be at McGill University on Tuesday. Please Vote For Me (dir. Weijun Chen, China, 2007) is a study of how democracy works in a grade 3 class in China. There really is no better way to explain the film than to watch the trailer, which is both hilarious and unnerving. I've posted it at the bottom of this page. Watch it. (More Info) Also dealing with East Asia is Tiger Spirit, screening a the NFB Cinerobotheque on Wednesday. The documentary looks into the great divide following the Korean War and how families deal with the ever-looming presence of the Demilitarized Zone between North and South. Followed by a discussion with Weiquan Zeng from Hanvoice Montreal, a North Korean human rights group. (More Info)

My Thursday recommendation is to head over to the Goethe Institut and catch Everyone Else (dir. Maren Ade, Germany, 2009), which won some awards at the Berlin Film Festival this year, including the Jury Grand Prix. Some have called it a modern-day Austen film, as it deals with contemporary coupling and the range of emotions and comparisons people draw between one another. (More Info) And that's all for this week. Enjoy the sun!
