FilmPop Rising

Posted by Andrés / September 28, 2010

Pop Montréal's little brother, FilmPop, may not be turning nine, but is showing signs of a growth spurt this year with some solid programming of music-themed film.

Pop Montréal, has proved itself as a music festival, to the point where it has found a sort of leveling off for 2010, its ninth year. Still climbing its way out of near obscurity, FilmPop has had as its goal finding as many worthy music-related films as possible to broaden the overall Pop Montréal experience. Now in its fourth year, FilmPop is nowhere near the plateau its "parent company" may be experiencing: so much the better for us filmies.

A big push this year comes from two supporters of FilmPop. Cinequanon, a group of film enthusiasts who are better known for holding screenings in their backyard, have rented out a film space to screen two classic silent films accompanied by live music. Haxan: Withcraft Through the Ages screens Thursday at 8pm with a live performance by Montreal Nintendo Orkestar, a mood music duo who supposedly perform with Nintendo DS portables. On Saturday at 9:30pm, musicians Grimes and D'Eon accompany German expressionist film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Both screenings are at Studio Off Interarts.

Helping out in a big way (aside from being co-creator of Cinequanon), Tim Kelly's own Big Small will be screening at the Studio Off Interarts on Wednesday at 8pm. The film is a collection of film portraits of local artists.

The other big supporter comes in the form of another film festival, the FNC (Festival du Nouveau Cinema), who are co-presenting screenings of Mogwai: Burning and The Ivory Tower. The first is about music group, Mogwai, and screens at the Ukrainian Federation on Sunday at 6pm. The second is a comedy film that features performers like Feist and Peaches. This one's not until October 18th, but you can read more about it in the meantime. Feist is also the subject of a documentary screening tomorrow night at 9:30pm also at the Ukrainian Federation: Look at What the Light Did Now.

Blue Sunshine, Montréal's new-ish psychotropic film institute, lends a hand as a venue this year for screenings such as Toumast: Entre guitare et Kalashnikov, about a Saharan Desert tribe's handling of contemporary sound technology into their nomadic way of life. This one screens Friday at 8pm.

A few other notables include a series of films from documentarian Les Blank. Best known for his docs chronicling Werner Herzog's filmmaking and shoe eating, respectively, here we get a glimpse of his docs with a more musical bent: notably Creole musical culture. There is also Yung Chang's new feature: the director best known for Up the Yangtze. Before Night is being shown on the Ubi Soft rooftop and features a like performance. This and more can be found on the FilmPop listings page.

While FilmPop's place is still more an add-on than a festival in its own right, the help of local film curators such as Cinequanon is slowly expanding its programming from year to year. Right now it still only has a thrown-together news feed on the PopMtl website, but I have high hopes for what could be a real contender to the more sterile (but more complete) FIFA in March.

I was at the Rock for the open house today. I showed up aonurd 4:30 and was out of there by 5:00. Didn't have any problem getting in there at that point, no lines, although the fact that they made you wait on line for a free ticket was strange. The problems must have been at the start of the program. The crowd was decent for the free concert they were giving. Alot of young families which will be key for Seton Hall's attendance figures. Overall, it is clear the arena is a first-class facility. At the end of the day, though, its still a sports arena, and it will only be as attractive as the product you put on the floor during the season.VC
