Reel Forecast: Screenings to ward off evil spirits

Posted by Andrés / October 15, 2010

20101015_halloweenmovies2.jpgWe're halfway through October and the leaves have begun their ever-quickening decay and fall to the pavement below. Cold breeze and dark night await us as we wake. In only a few weeks time, the streets will be crawling with miniature devils, vampires and (what's in this year?) Mark Zuckerbergs. Until then, revel in the Halloween season with a few related screenings courtesy Blue Sunshine, the Rialto Theatre and the Cinémathèque québécoise!

Tonight the season starts with Alfred Hitchcock's classic, The Birds. It may not be as outwardly scary to the Saw generation as it was in 1963, but the atmosphere and outcome of the film are still unsettling. It screens at Blue Sunshine (3660 St-Laurent Blvd. 3rd Floor) at 8pm, along with three other screening events in the next few weeks presented by the CineClub Film Society. On Sunday at the Rialto Theatre (5723 ave. du Parc), catch a double-feature of classic silent films set to live piano and cello music by Sweet Mother Logic. Starting at 7pm, the films are Robert Weine's 1920 expressionist The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and F.W. Murnau's 1922 gothic Nosferatu. While the last few films are classics not to be missed, the reality is that a large number of you horror fans have already seen them. If such is the case, check out Le demon dans l'ile on Friday, October 22nd at 8pm. A 1983 French film, it's a classic tale of a protagonist escaping her past by going to a remote island only to have that same past come back to haunt her - only this time in isolation! It screens at Blue Sunshine. The last of the CineClub screenings occurs at the Rialto on Sunday, October 24th at 7pm and is another double-feature: this time two classic talkies with Bela Lugosi: The Black Cat and White Zombie. For more information on all the CineClub screenings above, check out their website.

Then, starting on October 28 and playing nightly to Halloween is the biggest yearly event of the season at the Rialto Theatre: The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Put on your best drag and don't forget to send MP the photos. In our day and age, public humiliation is a necessity.

Finally, in the run up to Halloween weekend, is a smattering of the funny, the twisted and the obscure. On October 29th, Blue Sunshine screens a 16mm print of Phantasm. "If this one doesn't scare you - You're Already Dead!" I'm sold. Read more about it and be challenged by its tagline. The next day is Blue Sunshine's Halloween bash happening at two locations. Start the night with a 16mm screening of a 1970s film, Bad Ronald, followed by a live show by The Cynics at Divan Orange. The whole night event starts at 7pm. Cinémathèque québécoise (335 de Maisonneuve East) rounds out the Halloween season with two screenings on October 30th: the zombie film comedy hommage Shaun of the Dead followed by The Last Man on Earth starring Vincent Price, which is an early adaptation of the book I Am Legend (of which there was a recent remake starring Will Smith).

If you're aware of any more seasonal screenings, share them below!
