Benefit Show for Psychotronic Cinema Blue Sunshine Tonight at Sala Rossa

Posted by Greg / April 24, 2011

Sometimes blogging is a lousy medium because words are incapable of expressing my appreciation for some things. That's the case with Blue Sunshine, Montreal's only psychotronic indie cinema, and by far the coolest place in this city you (probably) haven't visited yet. Blue Sunshine is a third-floor loft/apartment on St. Laurent with a screen and a couple projectors and several rows of comfy chairs. In the back, there's a kitchen with cheap drinks and food and a fire escape for smoking. A jovial guy named Dave Bertrand introduces every film with wit and appreciation. Admission is usually something like $6. The good vibes are priceless.

Those of us who remember the early-2000s days of Cinema du Parc know that Montreal has been lacking in the area of indie/art films for the past few years. For a city of this size with such a vibrant creative community, it should be easier seeing a huge variety of interesting, off-the-wall, rare films on any night of the week. That's why I'm so thankful for Blue Sunshine helping to fill that gap, and providing a lot of fun times in the process.

On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with some special added nights here and there, Blue Sunshine shows an eclectic mixture of independent films, horror flicks, b-movies, and just about anything else you could dream of. Every Thursday there's a film about music. Last week, it was a Buffy sing along. Where else in the world could you attend a Buffy sing along?

Here's the thing. Despite Dave's best efforts and the undeniable high quality of the cinema, Blue Sunshine is still struggling to cover its expenses. That's why CKUT is holding a benefit show for them at Sala Rossa tonight (Apr. 25th). The bill features some of Montreal's best indie/punk artists, like Porn Persons, Chevaliers Avant Garde (ex-Postcards), Spastic Joy, and Hand Cream (members of Pink Noise). For only $7, you can see a total of six bands and support one of the greatest things going in this city. The show will also be broadcast live over CKUT from 8:30-midnight. But still go.

Blue Sunshine should not disappear. To quote the event page, "Places like this are the whole point of living in a city. Montreal is shit without Blue Sunshine."

That's just the truth. Go to the show, and go to Blue Sunshine sometime soon. It'll be one of the most enjoyable things you've ever done in Montreal.

Blue Sunshine is located at 3660 St. Laurent

Nikki,Fantastic shots love the soft focus on the portraits and harrpasiy shot. What a privilege to go to such a brave wedding. They looked stunning relaxed, healthy, youthful. You captured all of that they will be proud of your photos forever. I hope that you get many more funky weddings to do like that one! what a great career that would be. Well done.
