Follow the wolf through the deep forest that is the Festival du Nouveau Cinema's film programming

Posted by Andrés / September 27, 2011

20110927_fnc2011.jpgThe Festival du Nouveau Cinema unveiled its 40th anniversary programming today, and while it doesn't start until October 12th, you'll need the head start to properly boil down its 292 films to a digestible portion. Unlike so many film festivals in Montréal, the FNC does not have a specific genre or theme in mind. Rather, it's kind of an amalgam of most of the award-winning films from top tier festival circuits like Cannes. Its presentations are all Montréal premieres and can oftentimes be the only chance to catch any particular film in theatres.

For their "ruby red" anniversary, the FNC is offering up a few nice exclusives, like their "Cartes blanches" program. Here, ten filmmakers including Denis Villeneuve (Incendies) and Bruce McDonald (Pontypool) created four-minute shorts that will be shown preceding various films throughout the festival. The FNC has yet to announce particular screening dates, so it kind of feels like a "Collect 'Em All" type of deal.

The opening film of the festival is Valérie Donzelli's Declaration of War (La guerre est déclarée), France's choice for the 2012 Academy Awards. Fittingly, the closing film will be Canada's Oscar submission. Monsieur Lazhar premiered at TIFF to a great reception, and is about an Algerian teacher who helps an elementary class come to terms with the death of their previous teacher. The film is directed by Philippe Falardeau (Congorama, C'est pas moi, je le jure!).

I'll certainly be covering more of the FNC in the coming weeks. On first glance, I'm already looking forward to Steve McQueen's Shame, Alexander Sokurov's Faust, Pedro Almodovar's The Skin I Live In, and Sion Sono's Guilty of Romance. Suffice to say, that their program is chock-full with loads of quality films, three-quarters of which even I'll need to do some research on.
