Pop Cinema: Free outdoor screenings of eco-docs & Spike Jonze/Arcade Fire collaboration

Posted by Andrés / September 20, 2011

20110920_popcinema.jpgA somewhat over-advertised concert isn't the only free thing happening in the Quartier des Spectacles this week. As a precursor to Pop Montréal's official opening tomorrow, Pop Cinéma begins tonight in the open air of Place des Arts' new (overdue) outdoor arts venue around Ste-Catherine and Jeanne-Mance, finished just in time for the Fall and Winter seasons.

Tonight at 7:30pm

H2Oil documents a few human stories linked to the development of the oil sands in Canada's prairie provinces. One is about a couple whose business collecting and selling fresh water is threatened by dwindling water sources. The other concerns the town of Fort Chipewyan, whose aboriginal population's fish diet may be the source of skyrocketing cancer rates. Through small personal stories, the filmmakers then expand the debate to a national level and ask the important questions: is oil more important than water? Is the health of corporations more important than people's health?

The Scenes from the Suburbs is a 30-minute short directed by Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Where the Wild Things Are) and in collaboration with the Arcade Fire. Set to the themes and tunes of their album, The Suburbs, the story is a man's reminiscing of his childhood in the suburbs, and a strange incident involving army occupation.

Tomorrow at 7:30pm

Blue Gold expands upon H2Oil's argument on the importance of water to the global stage. From the Great Lakes to Paraguay, the fight for control and purification of water seems to be intensifying. The film will be preceded by Les journaux de Lipsett, about a troubled Canadian experimental filmmaker whose art mimicked his life's battle with mental illness.

SCREENINGS ARE FREE.

Thank you kindly good sir!I love the idea of this as my U.S. Tour. I wedonr if I'll break America in the same way The Beatles did? To be honest I think the most I can expect is to return to Blighty and just start telling everyone I'm big in Japan.
