Reel Forecast: Freaks and Geeks marathon (!), FilmPop begins and aliens invade the wrong 'hood

20110916_reelforecast.jpg(Film screening suggestions for the week of September 16-22) "What if she puts her tongue too far down my mouth?... What if I throw up?" The pre-teens and teens of William McKinley High School ponder over weighty questions such as these in every episode of Freaks and Geeks. To the uninitiated, this eighteen-episode series was produced by two fledgling comic giants, Paul Feig and Judd Apatow. It stars young James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel, amongst others, and is arguably the first contemporary (i.e. turn of the century) comedy series, and certainly the best set in high school. Following on the footsteps of the incredible Twin Peaks marathon, Blue Sunshine is screening an all-day/all-night run of the entire Freaks and Geeks series this Saturday at noon! (more info)

It's a big week in general for Blue Sunshine, as they continue their "Dastardly Diabolikal Super Kriminals" series with The Phantom of Soho and Satanik, two pulp European films of the 1960s. Later on in the week, on Wednesday, it serves as the venue for Pop Montréal's cinema component, FilmPop. Bloodied But Unbowed chronicles the history of Vancouver's punk scene, while The Wolf Knife is the work of media artist Laurel Nakadate and deals with voyeurism. (more info)

It's certainly hard to beat Blue Sunshine this week, but there are other options out there. The Cinémathèque québécoise continues its series on radical 1960s Japanese films (more info), while Cinema du Parc hosts the wide release premiere of Detective Dee and The Mystery of the Phantom Flame (first screened in our city during Fantasia). This period epic/martial arts/fantasy film is being called the best to come out of China since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Cinema du Parc also screens a British film that's been garnering much attention: Attack the Block. The premise is simple: aliens are invading Earth. The clincher is where they are invading. It's not a desert in Nevada, and it's not the White House. It's the South London ghetto, and it's residents are pissed. I won't even attempt to redact the singularly unique South London attitude, so here's a trailer:
