Reel Forecast: Miss Bala, Alfred Hitchcock retrospective, RVCQ 2012, Bloody Valentines 48-hour Horror Filmmaking Contest, and more

20120209_reelforecast.jpgValentine's Day is coming and there's nothing more romantic than a beauty queen turned drug runner, an obsessed voyeur who saves a woman from drowning or a new wife that finds out her husband's ex may have been murdered. These last two are Hitchcock films: part of Cinéma du Parc's extensive series Alfred Hitchcock: Master of Suspense. Starting tomorrow evening, this week brings classics such as Vertigo, The 39 Steps, Suspicion and Rebecca (my personal favourite) to the big screen. As a fun perk, by writing your contact information at the back of each ticket, you have a chance to a stay at Le Chateau Frontenac's Hitchcock sweet (a room for two!), or film posters by artist Fred Jourdain. (+)

The beauty queen was in reference to Mexican film, Miss Bala. The film premiered at Cannes to rave reviews and debuts in Montréal tomorrow evening, also at Cinéma du Parc. (+)

This weekend will be quite packed for the film enthusiast. Budding filmmakers have a chance to take part in the 2nd annual Bloody Valentines 48-Hour Horror Filmmaking Contest at Blue Sunshine. (+) Cinémathèque québécoise, meanwhile, is screening some old silent westerns accompanied by live music on Friday (+), and Sion Sono's Cold Fish (+) and Manic starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt (+) - both on Saturday.

On Sunday, lovers can gather for a screening of the classic Bogart film, Casablanca. Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, this one's at the Rialto Theatre. Who knows? It might be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. I could keep going. (+)

This week's also a time to get a head start on the Oscar season. All the 2012 Academy Award Nominated Shorts will be screening at Cinema du Parc. (+)

Lastly, on Wednesday and Thursday of next week, catch the start of the RVCQ 2012 film festival - that's Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois. The 30th edition once again rounds up all the great (and not so great) locally-produced films of the last year with a few special premieres. We'll be sure to update you on this festival during the week. (+)
